Your daily cat and kitten news

Come on Lyndon!

It's more important right now that he's eating something

If he's still struggling in a few days (I think you said he had pancreatitis which can be tricky in terms of getting them to eat) then talk to your vet in a few days - or sooner if he stops eating again. Although it is not ideal, there are appetite stimulants he could be given, or even an oesophageal feeding tube like my Radar had to get him over the hump - just as short term things, I know the idea of a feeding tube is horrific but if they have a clinical reason for not eating and you need to get food into them in the short-term in order to get them through an illness and have a good life ahead of them as a result (it should never be considered a long-term option for both clinical and welfare reasons IMO, it is typically well tolerated though), it can be a lifesaver.

Sound advice, thanks; we actually have some appetite stimulant which we should be able to get into him now, hopefully that will help with the transition.

I was starting to wonder about feeding tube, hopefully we're past that possibility now, but always there as a backup

Honestly it sounds horrific, but especially for cats with something that they can get over and have a good life afterwards like pancreatitis that makes them really not want to eat, or have bad associations with eating due to pain or vomiting, it can just get them over that. I wouldn't recommend it to extend life in the case of illness that wasn't really recoverable from, or as a long-term thing -absolutely not - but for a short term get some food in there to give him a week or two to recover back to normal and then have a good life again, I absolutely would consider it. Radar did not find it traumatic (if he had, I would not have continued with it and given him a merciful release), he loved getting his cuddles and food - that response may vary depending upon how used to handling/friendly the cat is of course.

I hope it doesn't come to that, because it can be a difficult decision (when Radar had it he was in post-surgical recovery, very easy to handle, and expected to get back to full health so it wasn't so difficult to decide to go that route, other cases can be a bit more grey area) and tbf it is a fucking lot of hard work to do - you have to make a decision based on potential outcomes and likely acceptance from the cat of going through it really (they have to stay in, be willing to have dressings changed and sit on/next to you while having the tube flushed and food being put through it several times a day), it's not a good route to take in every case of a cat not eating, but if there is an end in sight where they can potentially get back to normal if they'd only get a bit of food in them as a short term thing while they recover from what is ailing them, then worth considering.

He really fucking hates having his pill.

Here he is hiding, er, on his throne. (Post-pill) :D

Might be a bit tricky if he's reluctant to eat, but I use this stuff - Jakey absolutely loves it and he pesters me for his daily pill.

Given how much food I've thrown away lately (after opening something that he would eat a fraction of then refuse to go near) it seems worth buying that even if it doesn't work.

Thanks for all the advice Epona, really appreciate it x

In other news, we have the joy of a morning poo from him today. At his worst it was once per week :( so this is genuinely a nice start to the day :D

2nd night of Jakey being allowed in the bedroom (long story) while I was asleep went much better than night 1.
Although he did do getting under the covers wrong and I woke up to find him with his head under the duvet and the rest of him sticking out the top 🤣
I did manage a good bit of sleep though and he was fairly settled and cuddly for most of it.

Sorry, I haven’t read/responded to the thread for a while but I had a request from Epona for some Trillian pictures.

Anyway, she’s had two days at home on her own/with a nice woman coming over to look after her. We got back today and I’ve just laid down, to immediately get a purring cat in the crook of my arm. We’re very peaceful right now though it’s quite hard to take decent photos :)

I had a really frustrating train journey from Birmingham with cancellations and overcrowding and not getting a seat, but it was worth it when I got in and saw Lilith. She was fine with my housemate feeding her!

I remember there were a few recommendations on this thread for electric blankets suitable for furry friends. Can someone remind me what they were, please?

how does she react when you've been away?

i used to get pointedly ignored for anything up to half an hour followed by a purr pile on my lap...
She didn't seem to mind this year. Christmas is the only time I go away overnight due to lack of trains between 24th and 27th Dec, and I think she's realised by now that I'm coming back. My two housemates who were at home are fond of her and looked after her well. And my brother gave me some dry Felix for her, so I'm just going to give her some for breakfast.

Last 24 hrs or so have been a bit worrying.
Beauty had a hoiking up session ... a lot of recent food, some fur balls and most unexpectedly, a round worm ...
She spent yesterday being very subdued [we couldn't get a vet appointment - not an emergency] and resting.
Ate a small supper and went back to sleep. But kept the food down.

This morning, she's back to her normal self ...
Eaten breakfast and her medication, had a couple of quick strokes.
Today's advancement - she went to Ben de-dog to touch noses.
Will be collecting anti-parasite treatment that we can hide in her food [and some flea drops for later in the week] from the vets this morning.

Awww, poor beauty. Hope her health is purrfect again soon.

Just short of eight weeks of being catless and I've just discovered that a mouse has moved-in.

It had chewed its way into an old bag of cat food and when I removed that, it promptly chewed its way into the much tougher bag of special diet dry food that was still in the cupboard. These are now out in the greenhouse, slowly being fed to the birds.

Away to clean out that cupboard, leave some mouse-deterring substances until I can get a trap down.

3rd night of Jakey in the bedroom with me again went well, although he got up a bit earlier than I would have liked.
I think I'll continue with this unless he starts pissing on the bed again (which was one of the things that got him banished when he was younger! That and the bedroom became Radar's sacred space that he could retreat to cos he wasn't as friendly with the others as they were with each other).

I've realised that although I'm more likely to be woken up in the night, I've missed having a cat in bed with me - although he did walk across my head at one point :D
He's very cuddly though, and I think he likes being with me all the time.

Have to say though he wasn't very cuddly with me when Sonic was alive - proof really that my darling Sonic was a bit of a possessive bully who banned the others from getting too affectionate with me
