Your daily cat and kitten news

It getting dark very early gives a false impression of how long the spare bed pillow has been occupied for now. I think it's at least six hours, and nothing I've heard from down here has indicated that its status is likely to change until dinner is served.

I have mentioned friend who gets occasional visits from a timeshare cat - kitty turns up every week or two, stays for a day or two, then goes again.

he's managed to trace cat's 'owners' and got in touch with them.

kitty is 22 and has been doing this for years, and they have offered a contribution to his board and lodging while he's staying with friend which he's declined

:)

Estée Elizabeth has been waking me every morning at 05:40 using her new-found skill of scrabbling at the balcony door until her paws squeak on the glass. She has also begun applying this skill to the wardrobe door, in order that I open it and she can sleep in there on my duvet jacket.

The pub cat I posted photos of and have talked about over the last few weeks has gone to live permanently with the pub manager at his home with his family, I'm sure she will have a great life but I am a bit upset that I will probably never see her again :(
Awww, that's sad. I remember when my friend moved away with his cat Sulty between lockdowns because he couldn't afford to live in London any more. I missed them both, but that was around the time my housemate brought Lilith home, so it was as if one feline related door had closed but another had opened. At least you've still got the lovely Jakey!

Beauty is still - as expected - very nervous, today she's been lying out on a "day bed" - the fleece from a radiator bed stretched over part of a camping mat, for much of the afternoon and evening. She took a couple of short strolls, walking towards where her food comes from !

Pleased to report that I've just got in a few scritches to the head & behind her ears, plus a very light stroke most of the way down her back. Several short sessions, with only a little pause between them.
Accompanied by a quiet commentary ...

She dodged her head slightly each time, but didn't move away.
Still not getting a purr, but she does now meow for her supper.

We have cat that started hanging around courtyard this summer. I have had cats before and could not help but get to know it.She was very timid. Gradually started to come in.

Behaviour was of cat that was not used to being picked up and was initially very nervous. So thought she might be have been somewhere where got shouted at. She was sleeping all day.( weather was cold and wet for a while) My OH is around more and cat follows her around. She is young cat.

Stayed for several weeks then disappeared. Than came back after few days. This has repeated. Was worried at first as thought she might have got trapped somewhere.

Now comes in late evening and stays all night and goes late morning all day somewhere. Routine is appears 10,20 pretty well that time every evening now.

Tonight came in with mouse to give to my OH. Had to explain this is what cats do if they like you. Very fit cat and active. Gets into our courtyard by jumping up a high wall.

So she might be a "timeshare cat"?

Was talking to OH about getting her checked up at vet. But now not sure if she is a time share cat whether I should do that? Any ideas?

My last cat- years back- never did this.

looked around the back and cannot see anywhere else she could be staying except for railway arches. As some cats live around the arches. But my place is only one with access to back alleyway I can see.

You have been selected by the cat distribution system.
Enjoy!

Take her to the vet and ask them to check for a microchip.
People who have cats that they want get them chipped. (Especially with it becoming law in April).
If she has no chip then she can be yours :) (And get her chipped/spayed if not already done)
If she has a chip and the owners are contacted and don't want her, then she can be yours. (And get her chip changed over to your name and address)
If she has a chip and the owners do want her, then she can still visit, you know she is also loved somewhere else, and her owners will have peace of mind knowing where she disappears off to.

Whichever way it works out sounds good :)

Thanks for advice. Thats very helpful.

Just had an awful fright ...

We are all busy with housework, cooking etc plus going in and out of the back door with "stuff".
That includes OH who is heavy-footed at the best of times, and even worse when "rushing about" - Beauty definitely prefers more gentleness.
However, some time ago I came down stairs to find the backdoor and connecting doors open but no sign of t'cat.
After quite a bit of searching Ben did his trick again, and pointed to her hiding place..

I was terrified that she had got out onto the road, which has had quite a few HGV in the past couple of hours.
Not to mention the weather - being wet and quite windy - would not be good for her as she has that large patch of very short fur.

After quite a bit of searching, Ben did his trick again, and "pointed" to her hiding place ...
... quite how she managed to get there is another story ! some help at climbing back out & down will be supplied.

Some food, peace & quiet, and her warm igloo are waiting for her ...

yes, the etiquette of dealing with kitties that turn up and say they are a hungry stray is complicated.

some effort to trace their 'owner' is reasonable - could just be someone who still thinks cats should be put out for the night?

After the New Year, Beauty is definitely getting a microchip ...
We'll need a "final" check-up after her operation, so I'll ask for chipping & flea etc treatment when we book that.

Hopefully, the local Cat's Protection will help with that. [Actually, they've already offered !]

None of my previous cats have coped well with collars, tbh, so as she's still quite a free spirit I'm not going risk live & limb trying to put one on her.

PS - hunger won out - Beauty just come out of hiding for her food and gone back into her igloo afterwards.
{we did add a few items to make it easier for her to climb back down}
