Your daily cat and kitten news

Heard some commotion upstairs earlier and almost went to look and Kizzy came down and had a tiny mouse in her mouth!
She got past me and went outside and Misty came towards her to see what she had
Kizzy came running back and was dropping the mouse on the mat and waiting for it to move then getting it again, Misty came to watchIMG_20231003_171057471.jpg
Thought it was dead but somehow got away!
They were both looking for it for aaaages and Kizzy is miffed! :D

That's exactly what Lilith does, she always expertly snatches the mouse away just as I get that close to rescuing it, then runs under the bed with it so I can't interfere. A battle of wills!

i got the 'being taught how to catch mice' thing from one of the mogs i used to live with. i described it on another thread a few years back

Or even more lucky if kitteh decides it's time you learned how to catch prey.

This consists of

Kitteh - Appears in front of hooman with freshly harvested, but carefully unharmed mouse / whatever

Kitteh - Gently places mouse at hooman's feet

Hooman - "WTF are you doing you little furry git? GTFO and take your mouse with you!"

Mouse - scampers round the back of armchair

Kitteh - looks disappointed, carefully retrieves mouse. Plonks mouse down again

Kitteh - looks up at hooman with "no, YOU catch it" expression

(repeat previous 4 stages if desired)

Hooman - corners mouse and picks it up

Kitteh - purrs and gives "you clever hooman" look, then is puzzled when hooman takes mouse outside.

Radar was good at dealing with the mice - he didn't piss about once he was over about the age of 8, he'd grab them and kill them instantly by stepping on their hindquarters and pulling their head up with his mouth, instantly breaking their neck.

Jakey also used to hunt mice when he was younger, he'd bring them to me while they were still alive though, many times I've been sitting here and he's run to me, leaped up on my lap, and dropped a slightly soggy but still alive mouse on my lap  :hmm: That increased a lot after he had all his teeth out, he would still occasionally manage to gum them to death, but a lot of the time would bring them to me to finish them off.

Sonic wasn't predatory at all, he had staff for that (me and the other cats).

When you have a cat with 200 IQ 😲 Whether it's opening doors, navigating complex obstacles, or even playing interactive games, these highly intelligent cats prove that they are truly in a league of their own. Get ready to be amazed by the intelligence of our feline friends in the video.

Vic does this too. On the rare occasion that Lil’ Bob has a mouse, he doesn’t really know what to do and leaves it to run away as he didn’t want to kill it in the first place. That is why we love him to distraction 🥰

Bad news. Our cat Marvin has something wrong with him. He keeps attacking people.

He just full on attacked me. Multiple bites on both legs. Clung to my leg and had to be kept away from me with chairs and me using the fridge door to shield myself.

Fuck me. Spent last 15min or so disinfecting various bits. My legs are on fire.

If you get any swelling or infection around those wounds you need to go to A&E, cat bites can cause gangrene due to bartonella - so please don't leave it without treatment if it looks worse in a few hours or if you get any other symptoms of infection - headache, fever, heat or redness around the wounds etc.

In terms of the cat, is he normally tame or normally a bit feral? I would assume he is in some pain and distress or a lot of fear to react like this - moreso for a normally tame pet cat, are you able to (using a thick blanket and wearing thick clothing for protection) get him into a carrier to a vet for assessment?

Also really sorry to hear about this - I would say any sudden personality change or aggression is probably due to pain or a health issue of some sort.
Love to you mate, I hope you are both OK.

He has been somewhat aloof but not vicious. These incidents do have a trigger of noises but this time it was just the bin lid closing. He was just at the vet. A little while after the first biting we took him for the snip. He seemed a lot calmer and peaceful for a while.
He was OK with my aunt and mother this time so the managed to lure him into the other room with food.

He will be going back to the vet to work out what is wrong. If I had been a child that could have been my face.

This was not a get away from me swipe or bite he deliberately crossed the room and tried multiple time to attack again from a distance.

If this was anyplace but here I'd be getting a rabies shot right now.

It sounds then like it could be behavioural and related to past trauma if it is related to sudden noises - fear aggression is definitely a thing, as is misplaced aggression - cats can basically have PTSD.
There are some medications that can help with that and I'd definitely mention to the vet that it seems triggered by sudden noises. Might be worth asking for a referral to a cat behaviourist if you can afford that or if insurance will cover it.
Although I think the risk of rabies here is pretty much non-existent, I would still keep an eye on those bite wounds, infection, tetanus, sepsis etc. can still be a problem with cat bites here.

Fingers crossed for you both.
