For the younger viewers who might not be familiar with Bob in his early years singing about a 4th form girl!

And here are Bob and boys trying to get some Roxy Music/Busby Berkeley glamour going on.

It is sociologically interesting that a decade before, the biggest Irish act were the Johnstons.

No Sweat were shite as we're My Little Funhouse though MLF did get a massive recording contract with Geffen post Nirvana, and spunked the lot on recording their only LP. Eventually moved to LA.

The Frames.

There's something about the way Glen Hansard scrunches up his face and closes his eyes REALLY REALLY TIGHT at the DEEP & EARNEST part of the song, that makes me want to commit serious amounts of violence.

and double shit marks for the that fucking dismal "once" film.

U2 are awful for everything they've become but they did one or two reasonable songs in the early day. The Boomtown Rats are utterly unsupportable self-regarding shite.

To me that sounds more like they're aiming for Elvis Costello's corner of the market tbh. With a bit of Bryan Ferry's complete inability to sing thrown in.

There's a definite "School of McManus" angle to the lyrics and sound alright - but they're also genuinely nihilistic and despairing in a way that outdoes Elvis C.

The Waterboys, anybody? They did a couple of OK songs but everything else, from 'This is the sea' seems to be overblown, pretentious dreck or in the case of 'Room to Roam', twee, smug and irritating dreck. My ex flatmate used to play their albums loud and for long periods of time. I ended up cutting the plug off his stereo.:D
