What A Load of Old Bollocks
I heard this again on the radio the other day.

I was massively into them in the mid 90s.

But haven't really listened to them much since. But It struck me that this song is a masterpiece.

Your thoughts.

Obviously the first album is far better than the second which features Wonderwall, but for me Oasis never bettered their debut single, Columbia.

it really is one of the worst records ever made.

musically it is atrocious, real nursery rhyme basic stuff if you wanted your children to slit their wrists rather than go to sleep.

lyrically it's meaningless, vague lyrics for thick people to perceive depth.

let's review them again:

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

Back beat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before but you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day but they'll never throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads that lead you there are winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall

oasis didn't make a single record worth the plastic it was pressed on, but even by their waterfall of shit standards this is a stinker.

Yet their success and track sales prove otherwise.

Seemed unavoidable when it came out. I was a student at time and it was just everywhere - shared a house where it was the pissed up anthem of choice amongst housemates.

Champagne Supanova I quite like if we must choose an Oasis song, but otherwise, meh.

i think clcat should explain the meaning of the lyrics so that us haters can understand why its so good.

I was a massive, massive oasis fan at the time. Was a young teenager and from my middle-class suburban world-view britpop seemed in some way to be exciting and energetic.

Even through the the prism of nostalgia, I don't understand how anyone can think their music is anything more than an unimaginative, uninspiring dirge. Awful stuff.

Who said a lyric has to mean anything when it was written?

no-one. i just think that it's nice to use words to convey an message, a story, or some form of experience in a song. why bother using words if they don't sayanything?

and how can you say its good if it doesn't mean anything.

fa la la la aha la
la fa fa fa ha ha ma

fucking great stuff, they don't write songs like that any more.

It's ultimately a love song.

Great melody and proved to be a great credible success.

It's really not hard to understand how this track and Oasis as a group proved to be so successful.

But musical tastes will always be subjective, however their (Oasis) success is objective and is well known.

Didn't have much going for it then, even less so now but at least its not played to death everywhere. Although I have heard it mangled in karaoke too many times.

I believe Lemmy is on record as saying he hasn't a clue what some of his lyrics mean, he just bashes them out if they sound good.

Difference is, his lyrics actually are good. Gallagher's are the worst kind of 'cat sat on the mat' rhyme for the sake of a rhyme cobblers. Oh, and writing about speed is way better than writing about coke - ditto for writing lyrics whilst on those drugs

Dreadful, whiny, plodding, derivative, dull rock for Top Gear fans.

And after all, what the fuck is a Wonderwall?
Oasis have said in the past that a wonderwall was what their mum called the wall where she stuck up their best pictures and good school reports.
