Tom Waits - your opinions?

godlike genius. up there with scott walker. it's a crime that dylan is a superstar and walker and waits are overshadowed by him. dylan has no character.

I really don't think Tom Waits would want to be revered on the same level as Bob Dylan tbh. I'm sure he has more than enough devotees as it is.

Dylan is a superstar because he has produced works of artistic genius for 50 years.

like what? i only like covers of his songs. and that one about the tired horses that he doesn't sing on

Or he produced works of artistic genius for about 12 years and has been selling mediocre records on the back of that ever since :hmm:

Although...when did 'Bob Dylan at Budokan' come out? That's brilliant.

you won't find many English literature departments in Universities across the world who don't rate Dylan as one of the most important poets/writers in the last century.

what does that mean? not a lot, I doubt to many on here.

Dylan is the only rock and roll star that I know that has made it into the liteary canon.

and that's just his writing!

Waits is a great songwriter - no two ways about that - but I've never been able to get that much into him. I don't really like his voice. I'm not knocking him though: it's just personal preference.

The idea that he's a better songwriter than Bob Dylan is plain ridiculous, though. :p

that's patently untrue - dylan's a hack! give me an example of dylan's genius please?
how about nick cave? he actually bothered to write a couple of books

Blood on hte Tracks. Have a pop at that. A real go with it and come back.

Give it two weeks of hard listening and then get back.

your life might never be the same again:cool:

Every album from The Freewheelin'... to John Wesley Harding, and then Blood On The Tracks, Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind, plus countless songs off lesser albums. And a few that didn't make it onto any album at all.

well i've never been big into songwriting but waits creates characters and tells stories in his songs and that grabs me way more than whiny waspvoiced dylan singing about how the times are a changing.

and if you don't think Dylan has cracked academia, check out some of the 1000 word plus tombes that disict and analysis his lyrics - all by proffs at major universities.

i'll listen to it twice - but that's all you're getting from me
eta: forget about it - he's not on spotify

Oh bollocks. Go and listen to 'Highlands,' 'Lilly, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts' or 'Tangled up in Blue' (to name but three off the top of my head) and then try and tell me Dylan doesn't create characters and tell stories.

FWIW I don't much like Dylan as a straight-out protest singer though: Phil Ochs did that better IMVHO, and 'Blowin' in the Wind' is a bit trite, although a beautiful song in its way.

Both are amongst my favourite musicians. Both amongst my favourite songwriters. Above all, both have grown so much over the decades that any worthwhile opinion of either requires listening to quite a range of their material.

Dylan's kind of odd in that his best albums tend not to have his best songs on them. Blood On The Tracks is a great album, but doesn't feature any of his best songs. It's also fair to say that the best versions of many of his songs are covers. Which isn't to say that he's not an excellent performer, but he doesn't actually have a particularly great voice. Which means he often seems to work far too hard at trying to do something with the vocal, and as always, that can lead to far too many mannerisms and not enough soul.

Tom Waits is incredibly eclectic. Just compare Real Gone with Swordfishtrombones. It's clearly the same voice. Other than that there's not a lot of similarity. Unless you really can't handle a seriously gruff voice there should be something in the Waits canon that suits pretty much anyone. The trouble is that you may have to wade through quite a lot of albums you won't like to find it. Personally I think he's always been excellent, but the last few albums are the ones I enjoy most.

I'm on the way to collecting every recording ever made by either of them. Furthermore I know I'll listen to the whole damn lot for the rest of my life. Even if in small doses.

his voice is definitely a problem - it doesn't make you want to make the effort to listen to the lyrics. tom waits does make you pay attention though.

That's entirely a matter of personal preference, though.

As I said above, Waits's voice does nothing for me, whereas I love Dylan's. But that's just my preference.

it's all a matter of personal preference though isn't it? it's an entirely redundant thing to assert really.
