Tom Waits - your opinions?

There's a Bob Dylan thread over there look --------->

Read the bloody sign, this is the Tom Waits thread

I know. That's why I started it.

But It's interesting that Bob is so great that he even dominates a Tom Waites thread.

So to be fair to Tom ( who I do love) I would like to offer this fantastic gem of a track. Small Change (got rained on with his own 38)

And the whores hike up their skirts and fish for drug-store prophylactics
With their mouths cut just like razor blades and their eyes are like stilettos
And her radiator's steaming and her teeth are in a wreck, and nah,
She won't let you kiss her, but what the hell do you expect?

It's funny that Waits is being seen here as Dylan's more interesting little brother.

I always thought Waits was seen as the middle-class Springsteen.

The dylan comparison comes from the OP, and is a bit pointless if you ask me.
i can kind of see the Springsteen thing (not least for his cover of jersey girl) but that doesn't really make any sense to me either. Tom is in his own little universe and he owes more to Beefheart or Harry Partch than either of them.

He claims he never heard of the Beef until he met Brennam. :hmm:
Seems unlikely. :D

as he toured with Zappa and had the same management it does seem unlikely but maybe he never listened 'cos there's certainly no influence in his work before Swordfishtrombones......
