What's for tea tonight? (#8)

I shall raise a glass to him right now.
I'm being cooked for by nagapie and mr n.
Just had asparagus with a lemon and caper sauce.
Upside down onion tart on the way.
Then CAKE

It's the day before payday and the fridge is nearly bare  So will be veggie sausages and oven chips I suspect.

Woohoo - thank the lord for cashback :D The boy was up at 5.30am to go oop north for a meeting, and I had a busy day so we ended up with a delivery from Khans :D Chicken Dhansak for him. Palak Murgh for me

I'm fed up to the back teeth of doing pasta because it's the best meal for the night shifters to microwave when they get back from work. I am fairly late to microwaves and only got one about 9 years ago. Can youse lot think of something reasonably healthy but comforting after work that reheats well in a microwave that is suitable for a household of four adults, two of whom are on opposite time scales, isn't expensive, and is cooked by someone who doesn't like unecessary faff? It's the main meal of the day for everyone.

We've all gone lentil mental if that's any use :)

I actually don't tend to rate microwaved pasta that much, not that I don't occasionally whack in the occasional portion into the the popty ping. Can get a bit soft and gluey ime - I find it's better to just reheat thinner pasta types by dunking in boiling water (or pour the kettle over them) and heat the sauce/ragu separately in the microwave.

Rice and other grains tend to microwave better if you ask me, so the usual range of stews, stir fries and casserole type things tend to form the bulk of my dingable lunchtime meals, complete with inexpensive bean and pulse padding.

Curry? Rather than do rice with it you could do some sort of bread which they could toast while it's in the microwave (assuming you have a toaster).

A surprise 'treat' cooked by father in-law who is an excellent chef. I expect there will be wine and a long sleep afterwards :)

Scratch that, steak, salad, and a 'grass starter. After having some last night, I discovered the local grocer just got some in today. The season has finally begun. I fear it will be a short one unlike last year.

I'd echo the lentil call. I often make lentil/chickpea/spinach/mushroom stew with whatever veg is around chopped up, and maybe a tin of chopped tomatoes. It works well because I can take it to work the next day, plus my housemate (who generally gets back later much than me) can re-heat a bowl of it. And they are so, so cheap.

Madhur Jaffrey's spicy chickpeas! Ticks all of your boxes and is bloody delicious to boot.

Tonight I'm making chicken and cauliflower curry, plus potatoes cooked with tomatoes and fresh coconut. To be served with some cucumber yoghurt stuff and washed down with delicious ale.

Thanks urbs, I'm definitely going down the curry path, and lentils and their ilk are something I always have loads of. The other advantage to curries are they are also good cold, ime. I also always have pitta bread in the freezer ready to be popped into the toaster. I'd just got into a bit of a rut because whenever I ask the lads their preference they most often say 'Pasta's good'. I'm just going to stop giving them a choice...

As it happens both of them started work a bit later than usual so we had pasties, a sort of tomatoey thing and potato wedges and they'll forage when they get in...
