What's for tea tonight? (#8)

Rare opportunity in East Yorks for proper Caribbean served curried goat!

We’ve been cleaning and tidying all day so ordering takeaway. Original plan was Chinese but I fancy a curry now. It’s been ages since we had a proper curry. Negotiations will commence shortly. 👍

I can put the leftovers in the fuckton of tupperware we apparently own. 😄

I had good intentions of crating a table full of nice healthy food as a small thank you for my OH for rescuing me today from an aborted run and lunches for the week.

However, I got as far as putting some beans in the slow cooker and realised I'd fallen of an energy cliff. I've got a tiny bit more energy now after lying down for a few hours and think they might go ok with just some tofu and brown rice (and sort tomorrows lunch)

Well, tofu gets a big fat NO from us both. Pressed, cubed, dipped in cornflour, 5 mins fried each side, put in curry for last 2 mins. Sauce was ace (though I'd omit the fresh coriander next time), but the tofu had to be forced down. Bleurgh. Paneer, chickpeas or mushrooms next time!

Ah that's a shame. Why did you leave in the curry after trying to get it crispy?

I think it's ok, but not amazing, and if I'm putting in the effort I'd rather eat meat. However, my partner likes and a break from meat and now Aldi do it it's actually a cheaper alternative.

Cos I've had advice to do so, and loads of recipes on the internet said to do so too.

I'm not a fan tbh, I've had it only once where I found it an enjoyable eat, and that was deep fried with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
Otherwise, it's one of those things that I'll eat, but don't particularly enjoy (a bit like aubergine!)

Maybe because you eat meat. If I eat it swimming in sauce it seems like a poor substitute, but served more like you've described, it's something different.

I do eat meat these days, but I was vegetarian for 20 years, and I happily eat vegetarian food now - there's nothing on this earth quite like daal/chickpea based curries.
I just don't like tofu (or aubergine) :D

Went to my new workplace recently and found a shop nearby has goat meat, I can't buy it even in my county! If it was priced I probably would have got it. Never tried it and want to.
I love a bit of goat curry - I can't recall ever cooking it myself, but I reckon brown it and stew it for a long time over a low heat in the sauce, or if you have a slow cooker that would be ideal - ie. treat it more like mutton than a prime cut of lamb that can be quickly fried/grilled.

Makes sense. It's sounds like you won't bother again, but if do, then some spices and salt in the cornflour and serve it crispy with the sauce, to me is a nicer texture for it.
Honestly, the thought of putting that in my mouth again makes me retch. I had to brush my teeth afterwards cos there were bits of it stuck to them.

I will just use edamame beans next time in that curry, or salted peanuts - they would work a treat. Fuck tofu in its arse.

ANYHOO, I will be making not tempeh fajitas (too close to the mouth disaster of tofu), but rather black bean and charred pepper fajitas tonight, with homemade guacamole and lime-dressed salad leaves.

Second half of the immense blackberry and apple crumble. I starting making crumble topping myself last year after years of buying it, and never looking back now. Absolutely gorgeous mixed with oats and with flaked almonds on top. With custard, naturally.

I love tofu, but agree that the texture can be a bit bleugh when it's in a curry
I like it in a traybake where it goes all nice and crispy. I've recently discovered that tearing it into pieces rather than cutting it will produce even more lovely crispy bits. Oh, and it has to extra-firm and preferably smoked.

Tonight I'm going to do a chicken/new potatoes/veg traybake.
