What stupid shit has Trump done today?

My favourite paragraph from the linked article

...“Everyone had been hopeful that adult supervision would mean that Trump’s foreign policy would become more predictable and rational,” said another longtime Russia hand. “We thought he would be constrained from making stupid decisions on Russia policy because of all this furor. But look at this mad-tweeting and the Comey decision: Anything can change at any moment.”...

So rather than 'in cahoots' insider opinion seems to be that it's just a fucking shambles, still no proper experienced people appionted to key positions etc etc.

Also prepared to believe the Trump Administration's coziness with the Russian government isn't really about political ideology but about mutually beneficial opportunities for personal financial gain for those involved. The leadership of both countries is kleptocratic.

Having said that, Team Trump and Team Putin both share a fondness for making life worse for ethnic minorities, women, Muslims, LGBT folk, etc., so . . .

One thing with regards to the Comey thing. The right are always testing what Joe Public are prepared to put up with in terms of their taking over of The Commons (shared stuff). This might be a test by them ( push push push) of whether the checks and balances work or if people are so cynical (and have been deliberately led to be cynical by the press barons) that they've lost faith in them. Personally i still believe in civics, voting, social contract, etc but I'm pretty sure the right hate them. They've replaced 'The divine right of kings' as a justification to rule with 'The Market'. One god for another.

I was just trying to find a good war movie on t'nternets. You'know against fascism and stuff. If you miss the reference by a millimeter you get big balls. I think the internet is fucked.

So now in an interview he's flatly contradicted everything that he, his letter and all his spokespeople were saying about the Comey thing. Totally changed the story and announced that it had nothing to do with the recommendations, he was just gonna fire him anyhow.

So, while everyone was chasing the Comey story, this happened.

Vice President Mike Pence Met Privately With Top Russian Cleric

A top cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin met privately with Vice President Mike Pence Thursday morning and urged the U.S. to cooperate with Russia to combat terrorism in the Middle East
Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev of Moscow, who chairs the Russian Orthodox Church’s external relations department, spoke with Pence backstage at evangelist Franklin Graham’s Washington summit on religious violence against Christians.
“It is only one united, international anti-terrorist coalition which can combat terrorism and win,” Hilarion told TIME during an interview in a suite at the Trump International Hotel in D.C., a few blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. “The two countries should put these political differences aside.”

This may not have made the front page in most mainstream media, but will have been plastered over news sources consumed by American church goers. And they will rejoice at this.

I've seen Americans argue that only the 'two greatest Christian nation's can defeat ISIS (or sometimes, just crush Muslims) by joining forces. It's time to abandon those pesky unbelieving Europeans would pander to godless Muslims.

They'll can criticism of Russian persecution of protestants so not to burst the bubble of their new found love for conservative Orthodoxy.

This is all another handy was to keep their loyal support base loyal. How better to do that than with the promise of a modern crusade?

Ah post-reds under the bed, I salute your Neo-Macarthyite courage and indefatigability.

I don't think it's got anything to do with ideology, though, in Trump's case (though there's definitely a link between Bannon et al and the "traditionalists" in Russia).

And they're not even under the bed, they're in it, in the shape of Mannafort, Carter Page, Tillerson, and Wilbur Ross. Trump's just tweeted about making peace between Russia and Ukraine and Mike Pence met with the head of the Orthodox Church yesterday.

If the Trump team get away with this it'll probably be the end of real democracy. For a generation or so.

Trump is such the narcissistic big man that he can't even stick to his own story, can't handle things the way normal politicians do - he's come out with it and said the 'Russia thing' was part of the reason for sacking Comey. Also admitted he asked him directly whether he was being investigated:
Donald Trump admits 'this Russia thing' part of reasoning for firing Comey
As always though, it's a weird world where he's said a thousand contradictory things, condemned himself in story after story, but remains immune to the consequences of being a bullshitter in chief.

He's tweeting up a storm today. He's hinted it may be a good idea to get rid of the press briefings and hand out flyers instead and also said his "surrogates" can't expect to be perfectly informed at briefings.
