What new foods have you tried recently?

I had that in Thailand. Several times my brother's Thaingirlfriend was told they were impressed how much heat I could handle.
Apparently in Thailand (third hand story, I've never been) they now have three strengths. Tourist, "Thai style" - which is what they give to obnoxious tourists who think they can handle the heat...and real Thai style.

Got my mouth blown off by a papaya salad at a festival in Leeds and I asked the girl how much hotter she would have it...she said mine wasn't even spicy :D

Oh and when looking for new sweeties and things in pound shops etc, check end of aisle displays and very low or very high on the sweet area shelving.

Yep. Before a trek up a very high waterfall we stopped in a small village for a breakfast of chicken and noodles in broth. The Thai sign there warned of heat :) Bro's missus also made a curry one night that was so hot it made her cry and I was okay with it. Does give you chili bum mind!

spanglechick and I had a Turkish dessert called kazandibi the other day. It was like rolled up cinnamon flavoured snot :(

And I had pigeon pastilla in Morocco and it was delicious. I don't think I've ever eaten pigeon before

I don't like most Turkish deserts. Either too sweet or too milky. There's even one made with chicken breast :(

My sister has told me this too after a recent trip to thailand. She had a ginger and garlic salad and ended up with actual burns on her lips! She said it was delicious though.

I tried halim yesterday - which seems to be basically semolina - it comes with optional cinnamon sugar as it can be used with meat ... I'm the supreme stodgemeister and I failed to get more than half the tin down.

I have a mixed relationship with middle-eastern stuff in tins ..

Stuffed vine leaves ... not sure I like mint in that context
Fried aubergines ...
Stuffed peppers
stuffed cabbage leaves

I eat quite a lot of giant baked beans ...

Yesterday I also tried Ash reshteh -
noodles with mint, spinach - quite bitter-tasting - apparently it's soup - so probably should have heated it.

Fez909 I've been in a B&M today and purchased Milk Duds and mint M&Ms. They also had peanut butter and pretzel M&Ms.
Pretzel M&Ms?? I gotta try them. Sorry weird foods. You'll have to wait until next time.

*fingers crossed my B&M has them*

How were the Milk Duds? Was it your first time? :)

Heehee. Glad I can play evil enabler! I've had Milk Duds before and I remember being shocked at how they were nothing like I thought they'd be. I'm saving them for this year's festival bag of goodies. I may succumb to the minties though. The pretzel ones are nice. Tried those before but the PB were better. I did buy a bottle of falouda today. It's proper pink with basil seeds in it.

KP salted peanuts. I usually buy a big bag from Waitrose near my work but I ran out and this is all they had in Sainsburys. They're all soft and so salty my tongue has shrivelled up. Not likey. The packet bears the legend "Best quality nuts", I'm considering legal proceedings

I like Bearnaise sauce but it's very fattening, being butter and egg. And I need to lose weight. So I cheat: a splash of wine vinegar in a hot pan (much of it evaporates) then quickly add two parts crème fraiche to one part mustard to one part chopped tarragon. Stir until heated through. Not the same but still nom.

It was an interesting experience but chewy, yes - I won't be actively seeking it as a food though!

Chew and swallow could have been interesting - it was very formidably spiced!

Did you like the pigs ear, pogofish ? It's so chewy. I find I chew and I chew and I chew and nothing is happening so I just swallow and try and put the whole thing behind me.

I can't figure out what redeeming qualities pigs' ears have (as food - obviously pigs use them to hear stuff) They are way too human looking before they've been cooked too. Yeurch.

dishevelled It's a discount shop: http://www.bmstores.co.uk/stores But I schlepped to my nearest when someone posted here that they had dark choc M&Ms and they did not. I think they stock different things by region.

I have not tried it yet but I am actively seeking the Icelandic yogurt skyr for which I have recently seen televisual advertisements....

Oh, and I've tried lots of new foods recently. Mostly Chinese food, and mostly I can't remember what it is. I did try chicken feet, though. Not bad, but not great either.

The best thing was Chinese hot pot. An absolute feast where all the food comes to your table uncooked and you put it in a soup sitting on a hot plate in the centre of the table until it's done to your liking.

(not the one I had, but looks identical)

Oh god, I once had chicken feet from a Chinese supermarket, eaten from the packet at my Russian stepmother's urging. They were in a grey, semi-glutinous sauce. They looked like cartoon chicken feet. They tasted of nothing good and the texture was exactly how I feared it would be. It's a bad memory.

Hotpot sounds lovely though.

I tried some ayran (salty yoghurt drink) earlier and really liked it. There's loads of yoghurt in the fridge so I'm going to have a go at making my own.

It's great, I used to bottle it with my raki/ouzo and take it around with me in my alcoholism days. Arguably tastes better mixed, the anise mixed with the turkish yogurt and salt makes for a very interesting flavour.

Half of a Greggs nut (cronut) oversweet, flabby, OTOH nice caramel sauce and nuts (not enough of either)... haven't been so disappointed in a long while. :(
