What new foods have you tried recently?

Got it from Longdan. Small asian supermarket chain in and around London. Just thought I'd try. Found some recipes on the interweb but didnt do it for me.
The galangal was good but I have that loads of that before.

But do you have a random nibble in the garden centre?
Sadly I don't have one near me.
I think this will now be motivation to get in a cycle ride to Bath botanic garden :)
What they had in large quantities at work was mahonia and I was always disappointed that at no point did the berries become even remotely edible.

I have never understood dates. I'm glad to know I'm not alone.
They're an ever present danger - along with figs - at the deli when I go for my tahini ...
My favourite are actually Deglet Nour, but the last lot I bought had moths :p
These Iranian dates are a lot sweeter and stickier, but go well mashed into jumbo oats with banana.
Somehow my recent dessert indulgences haven't been affecting my weight trajectory.

Is that because birds got them? Or do you mean you've tried them and they're always minging?

I can't say I ever noticed any bird activity ... they were just too sour and with none of the promised blueberry flavour ...
A bit like the big fat blackberries I cycled past two days in a row and couldn't figure out why they had gone un-nibbled right next to a path access point so stopped to taste...

I've decided the solution to these type of fruits is JAM (I'll book my diabetes clinic appt now :/ )
I was wondering yesterday whether I could make blackberries meaningfully work in savoury dishes to make them worth freezing or whatever - I suppose there's always dehydration ...
Fresh berries are at the top of the fruit nutrient tree - presumably because of the very high skin to sugary pulp ratio..

Blackberries can work with venison or beef but wild ones I always had as blackberry and apple. Had supermarket ones first the first time about 30 and wow do they taste of nothing.

My answer tho is raw honeycomb. Lovely stuff but i can see if I ever got bees I'd also need a range of sizes for beekeeper outfits quite quickly.

I don't think the small amount of jam you have on a piece of toast represents a serious diabetes risk.
Yes - it's moreishness of calorific food that's the threat - with diabetes as a side-effect when you inevitably gain 20 kilos ... hence at this stage I graze blackberries rather than bringing them home and boiling 'em up - though I currently have some dessert apples in danger of going to waste ... :hmm:

I'm confused about the idea of a small amount of jam. I don't have it often but if I do it's not a small amount by any measure.

I confess I currently have a jar of plum butter here, but somehow I have been making it last - probably helps that I no longer have bread in the house.

I went through a bread making phase, took to extremes like everything else. Went from packet mix to bread maker to Icelandic sour dough in very short order. I ate so much bread lol. Days I could eat just bread and butter.

I love the stuff - I bought some recently. Not opened it yet but it's lovely on hot buttered seedy toast. The beeswax presumably is good for you too - it makes furniture shiny so must do the same to your skin I guess.

I knoiw it was sort of like chewing gum then it wasn't lol like cheap stuff. I know it used to go for 10-11x more than the honey at one point tho! SO got it, one of the occasions food being introduced was the other way around, I am usually much more adventurous and they had piss poor cooking experiences with a mum who cooks better than mine did. She did basics but did them well and involved us, well outside curry when it was a thing with fresh cardamon. SO's mum would not let her in the kitchen., she def does some things better than me but its very British stuff she taught herself and is simply better than me at. I mostly taught daughter til she surpassed me and made a career of it. No negative pattern repeating, SO now loves spicy stuff she was never allowed to even try at spicy levels lol.

Tried a new Korean Fried Chicken place that opened on the High Street.
Tasty enough, but you know they're catering to the (rather vanilla) locals when even my heat-averse missus says "I'd have added more gochujang to that".

Having eaten breakfast recently I saw custard croissants for sale. I'm now desperate to try one but where can I buy them from?
