What is your Favorite 3 Sci-fi Films and why

Bladerunner - for all it's philosophical reasons on being, reality and fate.

The Thing - great film about alienation and paranoia. fuckin' love it as a sci-fi/horror as well.

Aliens - hicks, hudson, gorman, ripley, burke. possibly the best characterisation in a sci-fi. this script is full of greatness.

What I can't believe is how many people like fucking Star Wars. Most over-rated thing in the history of the English-speaking peoples of the world. even more over-rated than The Beatles or Thatcher.

I think that like me, most of those rating Dune read it first and so appreciatted it more.

I personaly would have flicked over in disgust at those stupid noise guns (his name is a killing sound)

Dune is still on my (stupidly long) list of things I need to read. And I may have been distracted by Sting in a tiny pair of pants. Not in a good way.

Incidently, it's the only film I know of where the Baddies chief luitenant actually has a cooler death than the main Baddie.

Took a while, but I'm going to go with Oddjob (electrocuted whilst recovering hat) having a cooler death than Auric Goldfinger (sucked out of a plane window).

1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977
Why:Steven Spielberg Richard Dreyfuss François Truffaut. One of my all time faves

2. Starman 1984
Why:John Carpenter. Grate sound track tick all the boxes

3. Scanners 1981
Why Man did you see his head blast open.
from imdb:
There are 4 billion people on earth. 237 are Scanners
I wish I powers like that :D

There to many: Back to the Future,Metropolis,Cocoon - Brian Dennehy in it & it just light harted.

Was going to say Bladerunner but find boring now same as 2001

I'm sensing a love of creepily moralistic and sentimental sci fi here....

Agreed 100%. It should have been as plain as a Bulgarian pin-up that it was an analogy for fascism.

Unfortunately he was a bit too subtle for a lot of people. Only got a pirate copy so haven't heard the commentary .The humans are all shiny and happy living in what looks like a utopia.Bugs are nasty and violent with no redeeming features so its hard to see any downside to the supposedly fascist
state they live in. No apparent discrimination or oppression .
Except Heinlein original idea that the citizenship had to be earned.
It defiantly makes it a great film as we can still argue about .
Unlike starship troopers 2 don't watch it .

Still think the book would have be great to film if only for the opening scene.

Not sure you can call Escape from New York sci fi, as there is hardly no science in it really, the most scientific bit is probably the President's bracelet. Hardly seems enough to qualify it as Sci Fi.

You're being a bit narrow with your definition there. I consider that the whole concept of New York having to be used as a giant prison to be enough of an idea to qualify the film as Science Fiction.

Hard to choose just three -
There's the 50s classics -

Day the Earth stood still
Them!
Invasion of the bodysnatchers

60s and 70s -

Planet of the Apes is top. Possibly the best shock ending ever.
The body snatchers remake.
Dark Star (cult very early john carpenter low budget classic)
Silent Running
Empire Strikes Back
Clockwork Orange?

80s to present -

Brazil
Scanners
Terminator 1 and 2
Total Recall
Matrix

However Bladerunner is a masively over-rated pile of dull and 5th element is quite bollocks as well.

End of Evangellion .:eek:Why its not even a good episode of evangellion!

It's not an episode, it's a film. Are you sure you have seen it? If you have ignore this next bit.

It's the real ending with the end of the world and all that. The TV ending is what's going on in Shinjis head, the film is the mega apocalypse with Rei as big as a planet.

Lost in SpAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE

was abit poo.

The Joey from freinds film version plumbed new depths of badness also
