Visiting the west coast in August - midge mayhem?

I'm doing the north coast loop starting tomorrow starting from Glasgow, what's my chances of staying bite free?
I'm guessing the lashing rain forecasted should help :)

End of September? The midge season should be over now, especially given the weather.

I should think you are well past the worst of it. Hope the heavy weather forecast for the East Coast passes you by.

Just ensure you don't do the stretch to Durness on a Sunday - Unless things have changed in the last few years, petrol stations can be rather thin on the ground.

There was nothing worse than being on a sweetly running (for once!) but thirsty Ducati and having to ride like an absolute angel because of it. Even then I think I rolled in to Durness on fumes!

We went into Ceilidh Place for dinner danny la rouge, very nice and cool artwork on display.

Pogofish, I know what you mean about the petrol stations, but luckily they seem just about placed for my Triumph, some of them are 24h automatic ones now. Which is a result.
Though I did have to ride once to the mpg to make the next one lol

Back in the West - the far, far West and on my way somewhere that makes this place look like the bright lights.

However, due to a major ferry going out of action, I had to make a mad dash across country to get the only boat I could get- along with everyone else. I ended up as one of the last two vehicles shoehorned in to the back of the open deck. Cars were so tight packed, it was hard work getting to the gangway.

Again, the almost complete lack of midges is a very pleasant surprise - only a few nr Lochcarron.

The bastards will sit on your lenses waiting for you to unmask.
"You can unmask lads its endex"
"Do we have too?"
A pointless exercise where we sat defending a loch being eaten alive till we masked up.

Yup, but it looks like I won't be on tomorrow's boat as planned! Thursday or Friday maybe.

So sitting drinking in the sun outside the pub at Leverburgh, watching the ferry go and making use of CalMac's WiFi!

Are you going on that new fast boat service? I've had opportunities in the past to get to st kilda on "normal" boats but the length of the journey has put me off as I'm prone to sea sickness. Tempted to give the fast boat a go some day although i suppose it also removes some of the romance of its isolation.

I went to Eigg a few years ago and I don't recall the midges being a problem (on the same trip I was menaced by midges on the Isle of Rùm.) How are you getting from Barra to Eigg? Are you going for the Howlin Fling?

Yes, from Leverburgh. So fingers crossed for Thurs/Fri!

Glorious morning at Luskintyre - got up about 4-30 to lovely sunrise light. Next to no midges last night but an interesting collection of Machair beasties under the tent this morning - glad I have my provisions in a sealed box. Also lovely wild orchids beside my tent.

Lucky thing. I'd love to go there. We're off to South Uist, Barra then Eigg next week though :) hopefully the midgies won't be too terrible :hmm:

It's been a longstanding ambition to go there that I hope I'll finally realise.

However, if I don't, manage, I'll probably be shot for not going visiting at Tiagharry!

Yes, going for Howlin Fling. We went last year too. We're taking the bikes this year and making a bike packing holiday of it. Driving to Mallaig, ferry to Lochboisdale, riding down to Eriskay first night, ferry to Barra next morning, day/night riding round Barra, ferry back to Eriskay next day then a couple of days riding round South Uist, ferry back to Mallaig, a very welcome night in a hotel in Arisaig and ferry to Eigg next morning. Weekend there, ferry back and drive home Sunday. Can't wait.

Needed my first bit of DEET last night. A light onslaught nr Balallan but not a great deal really. Got my boat confirmed for Friday and work warned that I might be a couple of days late as it looks like the boat problems continue. They were apparently having to reverse everything off the Lochboisdale ferry because the front failed to open - adding hours to loading/unloading.

There are worse places to be stranded. It was reading over 30c at one point yesterday! :D

Light smattering of midgies tonight but my neighbor has a woodburner which does the job nicely for both of us.

Met three Swiss guys earlier who climbed out of their van in full-on gloves and anti-midgie net headgear, promptly spraying each other for added defence and saying how terrible the beasties were. - I was a bit WTF! There's hardly any. Wonder if there is a market for anti-midgie Nicky Tams? :D

Boat to St Kilda confirmed for tomorrow and work told that I can't cut a ferry back till the middle of next week. Heh..! ;)

Saw the fast boat from Uig turn up - it's tiny. If you are any way prone to sea sickness m, don't use that one. I,m not too bad but I was glad to get off the larger, more stable fast boat I was on because I probably wouldn't have held it down much longer. All was well on the way back though, despite more wind and a heavier swell for the first hour or so. Fell asleep and awoke to flat calm and glorious pre-sunset light as we approached the Sound of Harris. :D
