Vegetarian Meals In Pubs

But do you think they should replace food that is more likely to be ordered with those options? Or increase the options overall?

If possible increase the options. Obviously that's not always possible for small places but ok for most.

There are loads of people (like my mum for example) who are not veggie but often are when they eat out as they don't know where the meat at a pub has been sourced from/only eat white meat and may not like chicken option/ like to try something different etc etc.

Do you really? More so than meat-eaters?

Probably not more than meat eaters but with only one or two veggies options it's always going to mean there's no option for someone.

If you're a meat eater that doesn't like blue cheese you have numerous other options on most menus but if the only veggie option includes it, what do you do?

My mate is veggie, hates mushrooms and pregnant so she's stuffed!

What do you mean?

I often am in a pub and the meat they have on offer I am don't really like (or don't fancy, I am pretty picky about meat) but I don't blame the pub.

What I am saying is that at the end of the day, pubs have to pick there dishes around what a majority will like, meat and veggie, and you are never going to please everyone.

I don't think that's enough, there should be at least 3-4 veggie options on a full menu including one to cater for vegans.

I don't think that's unreasonable.

Aim is to have a small menu in this case. Burgers (beef and two types of veg) being the focus. Then steak, fish and chips and chicken curry. Two types of chilli (beef and bean) and another (probably halloumi) veg main.

Well on a small menu that seems more than fair.

I think I mentioned a pub I went to where the only option was jacket and cheese.

This was a large food pub with soft play and kids parties!

And if you want the food to be any good, you need a limited number of dishes which are ordered frequently, so they are practiced in making them from ingredients that are bought fresh because they will definitely be used.

Sorry, read it as 'those fussy eating vegetarians'

Of course you're never going to please everyone - but when the veggie option is just that (one or maybe two dishes) it's shit and poor planning from the pub/brewery. Most pub food is frozen, so not having more of a choice because it isn't as popular is a cop-out

The last time I went for a Sunday lunch at a pub the only option was a nut roast and they didn't even have any veggie gravy (not ran out, didn't have any!) So someone thought it was ok to serve a meal of dry veg and yorkshire puddings.

If it's frozen they should have loads of veggie options.

They should yes, but in my experience that is never the case.

My ex used to work for a big brewery and she's had to pick them up over the menu a few times - once when the only veggie option had parmesan in it - apparently they weren't even aware that that wasn't veggie!

Yes that is indeed crap.
I had just noticed though that for every option suggested, someone said "I don't like that".
I would imagine in the same way as on the burger thread, for every recipe/extras there is someone that doesn't like it, but this thread is about vegetarian food so there was not much point mentioning what some meat eaters might not like.

I have had this before- cost the same as the meat option as well! It is surprisingly hard to eat roast dinner trimmings without any lubricant. I resorted to ketchup in the end and have never been back.

i would prefer tomato sauce (not ketchup, a hot one) over veggie gravy with a nut roast. but not offering anything is idiotic.

Went to a pie and cider pub in Ludlow a few weeks back and they didn't have veggie gravy but had a thick tomato sauce/salsa full of peppers etc to go over the veggie pie options. Even the meat eaters preferred it- also had loads of interesting veggie pie options and nothing was over eight quid despite the fact it was right next to the castle.

even a dahl and rice would do!

but we can't be catering for them fussy minorities, they'll want more and bring others

i think pubs should offer at least one vegan option too as standard. Like a really delicious 5-bean chilli, vegetable stew, and/ or tofu and rice dishes with roasted vegetables.

It is also obviously easier to change something from vegan to veggie than vice versa- I like that 'build your own' idea from a list of ingredients or food items.

i had a flatmate once who was a gluten-intolerant, dairy allergic pescatarian, and cooking for her was no problem. It shouldnt be for pubs either, and same with burger joints.

1 each of dark meat, light meat, fish, veggie & vegan plus the same in burgers and the same in curries is the ideal size for a pub menu imo. Easy to choose from, plenty of options for all and easy on the kitchen staff to. If you make the veggie curry vegan then every curry order gets two curries per order.

why would you have a load of curries in a pub?

i dunno, if i saw a large range of curries for sale in a pub alongside a standard pub menu, i'd assume it was frozen filth and steer well clear. i'd probably be right too...

I agree

You quite often get pubs round here that link up with curry takeaway trailers or have someone set up a gazebo out the back or on the beer garden selling proper curries and pakora and stuff
