Vegetarian Meals In Pubs

actually, there's a pub in preston does curries, and while they are frozen they are made by the curry house up the road rather than bought in from the cash & carry. they aren't too bad. although, not so delicious that i've been back since the conti opened...

A veggie curry off a pub menu is likely to be of the same standard as some frozen cannelloni tbh, but there's no reason why it couldn't be good if made right. My local always has a big pot of stew or a hotpot on the go which gets rave reviews. Unfortunately it's always meat and I think if a pub starting making big batches of decent curries they'd go with the meat option just as they do with the rest of the menu

Cripes, this thread is enough to put people offering a decent range of veggie options. It's full of the fussy eaters/vegetarian crossover that makes every choice so difficult - offer aubergines, mushrooms, and or dairy and you'll still rarely satisfy all the punters anyhow.

As an old (chain) pub manager I feel more than a little sympathy from Badgers here. We're talking bough in stock from a limited range of suppliers mostly, food that's assembled and processed rather than fully prepared. FWIW the choice for omnivores is hardly more imaginative in most of these places - the obligatory burgers, a pie option, scampi and often a microwaved pasta choice. We're not talking imaginative or striking choices here, more trying to mitigate the ultra bland offerings of most brewery chains.

True, but offer that and you'd satisfy a lot more (veggie) people than are generally catered for.

I must admit, things have got better over the years - it used to be a novelty to actually have a veggie option that wasn't chips. But generally, unless the pub/landlord has a vested interest in veggie food the options are always very poor compared to the rest of the menu.

Not so long ago I visited a pub here with my ex's family. There were two veggie options. I had the vegetable crumble which was a few bits of frozen veg in white sauce with a crumbly topping. A few weeks later we went to the same pub and I had the second option, a vegetable bake. Which was a few bits of frozen veg in white sauce on a crumbly base... basically the same fucking thing but upside down! I'd say that that is a pretty unimaginative.

To be fair, there's probably only a smattering of non chips with <insert grilled or deep fried item here> choices for meat eaters in the average chain pub, so navigating some additional vegetarian choices from a limited range of suppliers isn't always half as easy as some might think. Particularly when the meat eater 'ready meal' options are generally just as cliched as the veggie versions - christ even the aubergine parmigiana and butternut squash ravioli options seem somewhat exotic compared to steak and ale pie and the obligatory fish, chips and peas on the 'other side'

NO desserts either :D if you want dessert in a pub you are a wrongun

There's nothing wrong with desserts, but desserts in pubs tend to be absolutely shite, worse than the mains. And to add insult to injury, that's what you're usually offered for free if you complain

Once I went to a baked potato pub. They had about 50 toppings. It was dreamy.

I used to work at Spud U Like :D it was my first catering job. They had all the correct kit for cooking and 'holding' jacket potatoes. Most pub/cafe spuds are pre baked, microwaved soggy shit.

Yep, I like veggie pizza. The only meat I find acceptable on pizza is pepperoni.
I vote for veggie pizza.

Proper veggie pizza, not just pizza sans meat, but a real veggie pizza, with lots of actual veg. Pineapple, sweetcorn, peas, spinach, broccoli, maybe a few artichoke hearts.

If the Albert did such wonders, I'd eat there every night. Possibly not every night, but definitely when Badgers was cooking...;)

Damnit!!

I can't believe I forgot sprouts!!

Some people talk about veggie food as though you would be catering for a minority, but there must be tons of people like my mum, for example, who cook and eat meat at home because it's expected by others, but when faced with an extensive choice of veggie options will be delighted.

If the veggie options are more appealing than the meat options, you'll find the meat eaters will be in the minority :)

I am not sure how much more clearly this can be put: providing vegetarian food is not so much a charitable act as good business sense.

We hear a lot from the licensed trade about hard times, yet the response from the licensed trade to the idea that providing a service to 7-10% of the market seems to be a combination of excuses as to why it's too much trouble and lots of arguing about why they shouldn't have to cater to minority tastes.

Fine. If you don't want to, that's fine: plenty of pubs have made excellent business out of NOT catering for vegetarians.

But a glance at some of the glowing recommendations on this thread alone should offer some encouragement to licensees who are prepared to broaden their appeal...

I went toa pub with my extended family a couple of years ago. Not only did they not offer a veggie option AT ALL but the landlord sneered at me for asking. So that made excellent business sense because my entire extended family are local and when we got together (frequently) I refused to go there. Genius. He won't remember me. He won't remember the other veggies he has accused of attention seeking. He isn't there any more - can't think why...

One local pub used to do 'pizza chips'-chunky chips with the skin on, with any pizza topping from the menu.

to be honest it's not just pubs, loads of shops that do sandwiches are just as bad, or shop bought pizzas, you get some cheese/tomato shit which is all right but when its the only thing on offer its like - no

been eating less and less meat recently because its expensive and goes off quickly. i've also got back into the old religious stuff a bit
