Vegetarian Meals In Pubs

Grilled for me, makes it less of a salad sandwich.

That was my thinking too....

I asked this same question in the MEAT burger thread but what are the cow dodgers thoughts?

Which plate would the bUrger75 crew like to see most:

1. Burger, chips and pot of burger relish
2. Burger, chips and pot of coleslaw

This is assuming you have access to ketchup/mayo/etc on the table?

I am ditching the gherkins as a 'standard' part of the burger.
Would they go with halloumi well then?
I am not sure as I don't (and nor does 87.2% of the civilised world) eat them.

Personally, I've not been that keen on haloumi as I find it too salty. However, recently I've discoved that it goes very well with dishes that include vinegar which counters the saltiness. So I would go for a gherkin or similar
What is a haloumi burger? A burger made with haloumi? Or a grilled/fried slice of cheese?

Basically thick chunks of halloumi

Tricky eh? It is not inflexible so if someone wants both but you really want to put out a standard looking plate. Only have room for one pot

I'd say coleslaw would probably be more popular. I always ask for no coleslaw in case it doesn't come in a little pot and infects the rest of the food. : D

Are they those little paper pots? Cos if so, relish. A little paper pot of coleslaw doesn't look enough.

That is my thought too. Only problem is aesthetics (people eat with their eyes before their mouths) really. The burger bun is light brown, the chips are light brown and if the plate is completed with a white bowl full of cream coloured coleslaw, it may be a little bland..

Nah, white ceramic pots about 3/4 times the size of those paper fuckers

White ceramic pot full of relish is too much relish. And if there's just a bit of relish it'd look mean. So coleslaw  (and maybe a little paper fucker of relish).

No salad?

Question for the halloumi fans.

If you had a halloumi 'burger' how would you expect it to come? I was thinking brioche bun, mixed leaf salad, tomato, little mayo, thick grilled slices of halloumi, some salsa to top?

No mayo! Cold mayo plus warm grilled cheese, eurgh. Otherwise it sounds lovely. At home I usually have halloumi with sweet chilli sauce, but salsa sounds like it would work too.

That pot does sound too big for relish, but I see what you mean about the colours. Maybe another slice of tomato on the side just to brighten it up? And/or something green like a couple of cucumber slices?

Not sure about the sweet bun you suggest. A local pub does the halloumi burger very well. I've copied it and used the same ingredients for when I do the veggie catering at an event I help out with (the landlord of the pub is flattered).

Halloumi - I slice a regular pack into three, but this costs much more than a quality burger. I have not been able to find catering halloumi, when I asked the pub they told me they got the halloumi form a supermarket.
Tzatziki - cool and garlicy, yum.
Rocket - the peppery flavour works very well against the squeeky cheese and tazatziki
Roasted pepper from a jar or perhaps some mushrooms
They use a regular bun - but don't ruin it with low quality bread.

Served with salad or chips. £6 - the pub is known for good food and fair prices. It's also known for selling very expensive beer!

When I have it at home I like it with sweet chilli on one piece of bread and mustard on the other. When putting on a BBQ at home I often go the whole way and make mustard burger rolls to go with the burger.

Sweet chilli!

I always avoid coleslaw as I assume it's made from battery eggs.

Gherkin slices?

My suggestion was that rather than 1 or 2 big thick slices of Halloumi, you get the same amount but sliced thin and crisped up, maybe layered with the other stuff.
A big chuck of halloumi with bun would take some gnawing on imho.

And I think gherkin with halloumi would be lush Cesare :)

I agree, thin slices of haloumi (cooked until slightly golden, not overly charred) are better than thick peices - there's too much to chew and the flavour on it's own isn't very inspiring.

You could add a falafel in there - i had a 'hallumi falafel wrap' with salad, hummus and salsa (all used sparingly) over the weekend at the Electric Picnic - it was delicious but woulda been too bland and unfilling without the falafel.

The haloumi is a bit superfluous then though isn't it? If I were to add anything to a falafel wrap I'd add olives or chillies rather than cheese :)

there wasnt too much of it and it was squeaky and freshly grilled. Complimented the crispy falafel beautifully. Olives or peppers would also be good
