URBAN'S FIFTY (one) FAVOURITE WAR MOVIES

Yeah, netflix is absolutely littered with shit CGI fests. I think that's why I enjoyed Fury, because it was mostly "real", IYKWIM. For all its faults.

edit: Real meaning tangible.
Netflix in-house produced movies are generally the opposite. It’s where quality film makers like the Coen Brothers, Alfonso Cuaron and Noah Baumbach now get their funding, because Hollywood won’t make those type of dramas anymore.

Fury is probably the last half decent war film made.

Amazon Prime is also chock-full of CGI war stuff, most of it Russian. Some of it's actually not too bad. Attackers is quite entertaining in a cartoonish way.

Netflix has plenty of great stuff, don't get me wrong, I'm mainly talking about the low budget cash in war movie pot boilers. Lancaster Skies is the last one I wasted 6 minutes on.

Thats the last way I would go about when trying to find out which films are any good. You’ll always find random people on who think some trash is a masterpiece if you go by IMDb. Even the overall score of 6.7 far from indicates rave reviews.
I take no notice of critics reviews. I find most of them are stuck so far up their own arseholes that it makes them pointless. I often found that I enjoyed films they panned and hated what they raved about.

You just have to ignore the fact that SS battalion would have barely paused while disposing of that troublesome tank so it's about 60 minutes too long. I do like it though. :D

I've often found the same with "completely random person on the internet".

Will check that out, there was another Russian one that was quite watchable, a mixed female/male fighter pilot squadron. But I can't find it now.

Truly spoken like someone who doesn’t know a thing about film criticism. That’s why you are stuck watching crappy mainstream films like Midway, thinking they are going to be any good. You are going by confirmation bias.

1917 is excellent..

Land of mine is another film I feel is missing a thread mention.
Mention away! But remember that this thread simply collates together ‘votes’ for films recorded in various recommendation threads, as aggregated by the 2010 ‘Log of war film threads’ thread, so is obviously skewed towards earlier movies.

If anyone wants to update, feel free - would be good to see how things may have changed in the past 10 years

I have always thought of 'The Battle of Algiers' as a favourite, but the Chinese film 'Assembly' from 2007 set during and in the aftermath of the Chinese Civil War a cracker.

1917 HD copy now available to download. stopped watching the screener version as I liked it a lot so decided to wait for HD copy.
