Urban Chilli Lovers Club

I'm thinking I should leave this club and rejoin when I'm not growing them in the Lake District. Very jealous of all your chilli crops. Good efforts
Buy a shitty plastic greenhouse thing in the sales in B&M or Hoe Bargains. ;) Or just grow small plants indoors. They will always harvest on a south facing window and there's loads of varieties now for inclement climes.

Some of the best growers currently are Scots in poly tunnels because of the long days during summer. There's a chilli for every location ;)

Would love to mate. We have a plan hatching on a road trip taking in the old way and down into Portugal but we put it off this year due to buying a house which has dragged on and is likely to drag on further now. Happy to see you've made a plot in the sun though even if giant leaks are off the menu :D

I bet you miss growing beetroots :D Hehe.

Enjoy the sun on your back though ;)
You you are always welcome mate just send a message . Funnily enough I’ve got a packet of beetroot seeds on the kitchen table . October/ November prob best time sowing here .

I've been trying inside but we have no south face and valley walls cut out the light quiet a bit. Outside the bastard deer eat everything that grows :D

I'm moving to Cardiff so will try there next summer

Eat the deer. I'll send you some chillis in exchange for a leg

Has anyone come across Tabasco Chipotle sauce?

I don't recall seeing it before. I bought a bottle yesterday - it is fabulous!

Sadly the bottle didn't even last 24 hours so I've just had to go and buy a couple more...

I started off with tasting it by the spoonful.

Then finished the rest of the bottle on a couple of slices of home-made bread.

It is the crack cocaine of the Tabasco line-up :D

Edited to add: I bought another bottle this morning; Waitrose are selling Tabasco at 1/3rd off!

Although I'm especially pleased with how this one looks:

What amazes me is that the plant's still got masses of flowers!

Ominously, the Naga Moresh has its first chilli starting to ripen...

My Naga Morish peppers (sorry for the day-glow colours, shouldn't have used the flash) are supposed to be an inch to two inches in size.

These are mostly about the size of garden peas :(

Will they continue to grow?

Speaking of littl'uns, I picked the first of my Fairy Light peppers. It's not exactly enormous either....

Those are pretty small tomatoes, the pepper's about an inch long.

Anyway, it's supposed to be about 45,000 SHUs so I ate it to see what it tastes like.

The verdict: heatwise I was surprised; it's definitely punching above its weight :) and it tastes quite fruity. Might have to wait until I have a few handfuls before deciding what to do with them.

Tasted the scorpion last night. hottest chilli me and my mate had ever tasted. It was really, really hot. Having consulted the internet it seems they should be about 4 times hotter than a habanero, which is pretty much exactly what I thought after eating some ! :D

I'm now starting to wonder whether they are in fact Naga Morish. The description for NM reads "Very, very hot fruit turning from green to yellow to red. App. 2 inches long going to a point. Must NOT be eaten raw."

There are clearly not anything like that size, aren't really that shape and went from green to red skipping yellow.

I suppose the only thing left to test is to eat them raw and see what happens...

So, the catastrophe that has been my chilli growing experience this year has nor been totally without yield. Two of the three have flowred, and one has set fruit. Tiny, and not numerous, but even so...

Cut the last of my crop to make a tomato salsa next week. It’s been a decent crop but last year (& my first year) was way better.

I read an article this morning about planting chilli seeds by March so I've ordered some.

After last years disaster of no fruit I'm expecting big things :)

I think you’re on the right track Supine, but I’m no expert as last year was the first time I’ve grown chillies at home. I remember I started the seeds germinating 1st March and this year I’ll be bringing that forwards a little.

Out of 12 seeds which made it to seedlings, only 3 plants fruited and it seemed to me those which were successful were the ones closest to the windows and which received the most light when they were tiny seedlings. I could of course be wrong! My plan this year is to get them all with windowside seats as soon as they are potted.
