Ukraine

"Israeli assistance" = Ukrainian Jews fighting for one side or another.
"IDF assistance" = former IDF soldiers who are Ukrainian citizens participating in the struggle for their country.
"why they'd be helping neo-nazis" - "they" = a proven handful of Ukrainian Jews.

I'm not lying, I'm pointing out that you have a fetish for Jewish involvement, and for exaggeration.

Now run along and hump your mother's leg, you piss-scented cur.

horseshit, theres a string of threads here were ive debated against dwyers repeated assertion that israel somehow directs US policy . Your talking bollocks.

the issue that arose from Frogwomans posts was the qustion as to why the propaganda within was so heavily biased in the coups favour , when i was pointing out It was apparent the bulk of Ukraines jews were taking absolutely nothing to do with it . Which to me stank of a state line .The exact opposite of the complete bollocks your coming out with . Which is just a personalised attack and nothing more, as is your stock in trade .

And like I said either post evidence of me unearthing jews as at the heart of the worlds problems or shut your lying little weasel cakehole .

Blah-de-blah.

And like I said either post evidence of me unearthing jews as at the heart of the worlds problems or shut your lying little weasel cakehole .

Yup, I'm such a liar that it's ME who's morphed "Sarcasm directed at Casually Red, as casually Red always seems to get round to "unearthing" Jews at work in such conflicts." in post #2323 to
"...unearthing jews as the secret root of a conflict" (my emphasis)
and then
"...unearthing jews as at the heart of the worlds problems".

Oh wait, that "lying little weasel" would be you, wouldn't it, you dishonest gobshite? :)

yes, youre indeed a lying little weasel...your blah de blah carry on underlines your complete failure to back your lies up , and now your splitting hairs. Expect this once informative thread will now continue to be derailed by your tedious personalised tantrum .

His motivation being easy to discern - Putin's Russia is more corrupt (but probably only slightly) than the EU, and robber-barons more acceptable there. An attachment to the EU might have shown Yanukovich up for the kleptocrat that he is.

Well, for being the wrong *kind* of kleptocrat. His background and allegiances are quite well understood.

The context was Casually Red's post just before his post, which was banging on about Zionists.

If you ever think you've spotted Butchers being anti-semitic then you can safely assume you haven't, and that he is actually taking the piss out of someone who has no trouble adding that shite to their bag of crap propaganda tricks.

Yes, that's what I figured but I couldn't see the context. No doubt butchers and I disagree about most things political but I was surprised by that to say the least hence the question.

yes, youre indeed a lying little weasel...your blah de blah carry on underlines your complete failure to back your lies up...

No, it expresses my contempt for you. Hope that clears things up.

...and now your splitting hairs.

because pointing out your mendacity is "splitting hairs".
of course it is.

Expect this once informative thread will now continue to be derailed by your tedious personalised tantrum .

Yeah, 'cos it's all about me, and how I'm ruining the thread.

It was a typo. 500 burning orifices, due to a mix-up with ingredients at the anti-imperialist curry house.

The president, however, didn’t confirm his resignation, saying that the country is facing the threat of a return of Nazism, as over 500 regional offices of his Party of Regions have been torched by the radicals.

http://rt.com/news/ukraine-crackdown-crisis-administration-393/

Deputy Chairman of the Party of Regions in Rivne, Alla Ivoylovoy, said that “armed masked youths burst into the homes” of party members demanding a list of activists who “participated in the so-called anti-Maidan protest, threatening physical violence and arson of houses.”

The Ukrainian Communist Party, which has been closely aligned with Yanukovich’s Party of Regions, has also been under attack. The house of the party’s leader, Pyotr Simonenko, was set on fire on Monday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Left Unity has issued a statement on the situation in Ukraine, saying that there should be “no foreign intervention in Ukraine – whether political, economic or military”.
The acting officers of the new left wing party are calling for “democracy and equality for all the people of Ukraine”, condemning the different forms of nationalism, corrupti...on and neoliberalism, and the drive to war.
The full statement is below.
Speakers from Left Unity are available for interview. For more information contact press@leftunity.org or Tom on 07817 024364
Notes to editors
Left Unity is the new party of the left in Britain. Founded in November 2013, it already has over 1,400 members and 40 branches across the country.
FULL STATEMENT FOLLOWS
Against nationalism, corruption, privatisation and war
The continuing political and economic crisis in Ukraine is taking a dangerous military turn.
Left Unity takes the position that there can only be a political solution to this crisis and that neither foreign military intervention nor foreign political and economic intervention provide the answers to Ukraine’s complex problems.
Whether under the flag of US, NATO, Russia or the European Union, military intervention only ever makes the situation many times worse. So it is in Ukraine. The West’s hypocrisy in condemning Russia for breaking international law is breathtaking: nevertheless, Russian troops hold no solution to the crisis.
As Ukraine experiences a deep economic crisis, it also has to be clear that neo-liberal economic policies - with the swingeing privatisation and austerity that will accompany them - will only exacerbate tensions and conflicts within the country, which will find a nationalist expression rather than confronting the real problems facing all Ukrainian citizens.
For decades, internationally, neo-liberal economic policies have contributed to inter-community conflict and social division and Ukraine will be no exception. The Ukrainian people had some success fighting privatisation in the 1990s and this can happen again. Economic policies which will meet the needs of all communities within Ukraine must be supported as a matter of urgency.
The only beneficiaries of neo-liberal policies will be capitalist interests outside of Ukraine and far right and fascist forces which are resurgent within Ukraine. Already these reactionary movements have used the crisis to increase their political weight even at a governmental level.
Political corruption has been rife at the top of political life in Ukraine, rightly provoking an outpouring of popular revulsion but this cannot be used as the justification for attacks and scape-goating of any community. There are oligarchs in all parts of the political elite controlling the overwhelming majority of the country’s wealth.
The demands of the Ukrainian people for transparency and democracy in Ukrainian political life must be respected and implemented. All peoples of Ukraine must have their full human rights guaranteed including freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate together with equality of citizenship and language rights and respect for the autonomy of communities under the constitution. There can be no second class citizens in any country.
- No foreign intervention in Ukraine – whether political, economic or military
- Democracy and equality for all the people of Ukraine.

I think it gets it largely right

...The president, however, didn’t confirm his resignation, saying that the country is facing the threat of a return of Nazism, as over 500 regional offices of his Party of Regions have been torched by the radicals...
So that means every single local PoR office in the entire country was set on fire and 'burnt to the ground' as you claimed?

Care to find me one other single credible source that supports this claim?

That missive goes down the rabbit hole v.v.quickly.

Is it impossible to understand that each situation is unique, requires its only analysis and can't simply be boxed in to some lazy, pre-existing political rubric?

Russia will most likley get Crimea, either de facto or de jure. The West will be embarassed for failing to keep their promises (principally to themselves). Putin's Eurasian union will falter then collapse because it has no sound ongoing economic basis when set against the reality that it operates in and in any event is not a serious endeavour in the first place, rather than merely being an expression of pseudo-Tsarist grandiosity (this is Rule of Law stuff btw butchers, I recommend you acquaint yourself with the concept - a subtle one but fairly important). In turn, Russia will either be (i) ground back in to being a failing one track state or (ii) collapse from within [the latter being much less likely].

The real worry now is what happens in the Baltic. I would not be surprised to see some further muscle flexing there in the next few months.

Last week (#1701) I listed the xenophobic nationalists in the gov & close to it: a vice-prime minister; 3 ministers (Defence; Farming; Ecology & Natural Resources); & the chief prosecutor.

I also gave the head of the National Security & Defence Council (NSDC), Andri Parubi, because although he is a member of the Prime Minister's & Yulia T's party, Fatherland, he commanded the Self-Defence Force in Maidan. It should be noted that when he was 20, in 1991, he co-founded with Oleh Tyhnibok the Social-National Party, which changed its name in 2004 to Svoboda - now led by Tyhnibok.

It seems 2 more can be added to the 6: the Education Minister, & the deputy head of NSDC:

"S. Kvit, an open nazi and former officer of nazi organization 'Trizub [Trident] of Stepan Bandera' has got the Ministry for Public Education. While being the head of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy he was righteously met with hatred by all progressive students. The position of a deputy head of the Council for National Security and Defense was offered to the leader of the ultranationalist ‘Right Sector’ A. Yarosh."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Kvit

Dmitro Anatoliyovich Yarosh: "In 1994, he joined, and since 2005 led, the right-wing Stepan Bandera Treezoob organization. During the EuroMaidan protests in the early 2014, Treezoob became the core of the newly founded Right Sector, a coalition of right-wing ultra-nationalist radicals"

Just on the iconography, if it hasn't already been said:
the red & black flag symbolises blood & soil
the vertical wolf's hook - so an 'I' in the middle of a 'N' - denotes the Latin-script phrase, 'Idea of the Nation'.

As the Education Minister has won his spurs, what can he try to build on? Well, courtesy of J Ed's excellent link to a 2013 article by Per Rudling, here's part of the current mission statement of the National Lviv Ivan Franko University:

"[the university declares its commitment to install] national consciousness, the forming of Ukrainian national self-consciousness and national dignity, love for the native soil and Ukrainian traditions, the training of a conscious intelligentsia, and safeguarding the intellectual gene pool of the nation [zberezhennia intellektual’noho heno-fondu natsii]. It trains [its students] in love for the native land, her history, the renewal and retention of historical memory; the cultivation of the best character traits of Ukrainian mentality (love of labor, individual freedom, deep connection with nature, and so on). . . . Physical, spiritual and physical tempering." (author's additions in [])

And politically what sort of place is Lviv, the former Hapsburg & Polish city in NW Ukraine, obviously with a proud & long-standing cultural history? Well, here's a scene from a recent home match of the local team:

6-47f33f1319.jpg

'Bandera—Our Hero', giant portrait of the OUN(b) leader displayed by fans, the Banderstadt Ultras, during a game between Karpaty Lviv & Shakhtar Donetsk, spring 2010

And where might these fans go after the excitement of the match - & any afters?

Well, here of course:

"The OUN-UPA theme restaurant Kryivka (Hideout or Lurking Hole) in Lviv . . . Its guests have a choice of dishes like 'Cold boiled pork "Hände Hoch" [hands up!]', 'Kosher Haidamaky-style salo (pork lard)', and 'Combat serenade' salo. Kryivka’s dining room walls are decorated with larger-than-life portraits of Bandera, the toilet with Russian and Jewish anecdotes. The same Lviv entrepreneur also runs the Jewish theme restaurant Pid Zolotoiu Rozoiu (Beneath the Golden Rose), where guests are offered black hats of the sort worn by Hasidim, along with payot. The menu lists no prices for the dishes; instead, one is required to haggle over highly inflated prices 'in the Jewish fashion'. Behind these restaurants stands Iurii Nazaruk, a Lviv entrepreneur and a graduate of the Ivan Franko University." (my addition in []; as salo is unrendered it is not lard)

Yes, you read that correctly: the uni with the folksy mission statement. Bringing business to the people, giving the people what they want, satisfying their demands & appetites.

And when you get tired of Lviv there's always the chance to meet up with old friends in the capital & dance the night away at an ethnoparty!

At the nightclub 'Territory Banderstadt', a xenophobic nationalist event for the youff, sponsored by the OUN(b) front organisation, the Centre for the Study of the Liberation Movement, and by the OUN(b)-affiliated Ukrainian Youth Movement, Kyiv, Dec 2011

As Rudling informs us, "A nationalist salute was required by the door, the dress code stipulated 'folk costumes and UPA uniforms', and the party featured anti-immigrant activities, OUN-UPA reenactments and games and the presentation of [. . . a] calendar 'UPA: People and Weapons'" (my []). A party gift! Welcoming in the new year!

(Wonder if those Israeli soldiers from Maidan, taking orders from Svoboda & saying no-one had been disparaging Jewish Ukrainians, would stay all pally & have a communal victory meal with their new comrades at one of those themed restaurants?)

written in the summer of 2012 (J Ed's post yesterday evening also gave another link - #2308)

As Lenin & Gramsci said aeons ago, you need to build a cultural infrastructure for successful political mobilisation: spontaneity is very, very limited. Politics is hard, hard work, you can't leave it to 'it'll be alright on the night'.
