The Germans were still using equine transport in both east and west theatres in '45. It made more sense in some conditions.

Horse are basically rubbish status symbols, mules and donkeys are way better in terms of the food/power ratio. But donkeys do suffer with wet feet, so not so great in northern Europe.

Anyway they were all good for the Germans who basically didn't have any oil, but also good for everyone since you can scrounge food for them as you move, no need for huge logistical re-supply chains.
