TV series recommendations general (excluding Netflix/ Amazon)

Not a series, but I can't see a thread for mentioning films on other services:

Everything Everywhere All At Once is going to be broadcast on Channel 4 on Saturday 7th December and will also be on the streaming service from that day.
I've been keen to see it for a while so am very pleased it's coming to a free streaming service soon and thought I'd give a heads-up in case others haven't seen it yet.

OMG  feel so silly now 😅

Killing Eve - would be my recommendation - it's absolutely brilliant

I can’t think of a series which went downhill any more rapidly than Killing Eve. They decided at some point that viewers were only really in it for Comer’s costumes, and there was no reason to bother with any plot.

It's grand, have made same mistake plenty.

Dying to see it, but not on our current streaming channels.

Have no problems waiting - only caught up with I, Claudius recently.

Day of the Jackal - so was he always this bad at his job or was he previously really good now he's suddenly got really bad?

He was always really good. He still is really good. But he let himself get emotionally involved which brings.... consequences.

What a great series though. I watched it with my 14 year old and there were plenty of OMG moments.

We binged all episode so far and loving it.
We definitely want him to get away with it all though.
Finished Day Of The Jackal last night. Really enjoyed it.

A couple of "not entirely sure that anyone would walk out of that firefight / car crash / etc " bits :hmm: but very entertaining. Having said that, I did enjoy the proper James Bond car chase in the last episode where he made muppets out of the police with ridiculously accomplished driving.

Yer man that played the Jackal did a very nice line in sang-froid but the woman who played the head of MI6 was even better. That upper-class, icy, detached professionalism that's utterly brutal.

Really good series, I genuinely looked forward to each new episode.

We finished it yesterday and really enjoyed it to. It made up for the truly disappointing Black Doves.

A couple of questions:

1) What was the second car crash all about near the end where he was driving and just hot hit out of nowhere?

2) What was the implication of the black MI6 fella sending text messages after being replaced at the end?

S2 of murder mystery comedy Based on a True Story has just dropped on Sy/ NowTV. Kind of a hybrid of Only Murders in the Building and You, it’s not about as good as either of those but still a 7/10 easy watching entertainment show.

I just finished After the Party which is on Channel 4. It’s been slated a bit for being slow but I think it’s absolutely excellent. Highly recommended. By me anyway.
Watching this on your recommendation and agree, it's excellent. Haven't found it slow at all apart from Ch4's bloody adverts.

We are Lady Parts on channel 4. Comedic drama about an all female and all muslim punk band. Really well written and performed and goes from quite fluffy Derry Girls type vibe to developing an interesting and moving story around identity and youth and coming of age. Some great songs as well - "Aint No-one gonner hounur kill my sister but me" .

1) Part of Charles Dance’s attempts to tie up loose ends, despite there being absolutely no reason why he wouldn’t simply pay up for the hit other than to have a story arc for next season - and, I suppose, to keep a couple of the supporting cast gainfully employed.

2) Presumably he’s wise to the Foreign Sec’s shenanigans and is trying to alert someone trustworthy, likely he’ll be the Jackal’s next target, the general (and hackneyed) theme of the whole thing being transparency versus cosy corruption.

Dune Prophecy. Not sure why I watched this if I am honest. I've never been interested in the books, and I found the films OK; they looked nice, like a really long Fry's Turkish Delight advert with space ships. Prophecy was slow going for five episodes and then accelerated to 100mph for the finale. I couldn't get behind any of the characters, even the rebels were annoying twats. Why does Mark Strong keep getting acting gigs? he has the range of door stop.

In the end the whole thing reminded me of Star Wars The Acolyte. Both share similar plots. I'd say Dune Prophecy is the better of the two, but I'm still uncertain who I was rooting for and who I was supposed to care about, or why any of these people matter in any wider story that they seemed in no rush to tell. I was also reminded of Game of Thrones, and concluded Dune Prophecy was not able to deliver political intrigue and skullduggery alongside fun and excitement in the same way.

I've gone from not knowing this existed

To being very interested . . .

To not being interested at all, in the space of about thirty seconds.
What a ride.

That is what watching it was like. One minute I was quite enjoying it, next daydreaming about something else, and then checking how long was left because nothing had happened for 10 minutes aside from some space witches arguing or Mark Strong stiffly reciting some lines, but saying fuck all.

The new take on The Day of The Jackal is astoundingly good.

Fans of the original will recognise elements of it, but it's fresh and immediately addictive. I binged 4 of the first 5 episodes on Friday and yesterday and probably would have gone on if I hadn't realised that Sky have decided not to release the whole series but to drop the remaining 5 episodes once a week on Thursdays, which is seriously annoying. If I'd known that, I'd have waited until it was all out.
I waited and binged the lot. I really enjoyed it.
You know that something is well written when you're rooting for a sociopathic killer of innocents... Or you need help.

I enjoyed Jackal but found the main character to be too emotional. Not the heartless professional I remember from the book.
Too many car crashes. Too many innocent bystanders dying.
Also, was irritated by Redmayne's voice. He sounded like he was talking with a mouthful of spit.
6/10
Certainly not the best show of the year. I much preferred Rogue Heroes.
