Turkey, ISIS, Kurds and Syria

Turkish citizens advised to leave Iraq as troops set up bases in the KRG & near Mosul & ignore Baghdad order to depart. Turkish government moving on Mosul, or just repositioning? Speculation online that AKP are looking to occupy Mosul, claim it as Turkish in any upcoming Iraq/Syria partition. Plan B, now that their preferred choice of neighbour, IS, have blown their chance of running the new Sunni statelet, or speculative twitter nonsense?

New Turkish bases in KRG? Anyone know how many troops Turkey has sent to Iraq?

Most of the news says there's one battalion with artillery & aircraft? ISIS didn't need that much to take Mosul?

Numbers are unsurprisingly vague - supposedly training Peshmerga & Iraqi Sunni militias. Significant part seems to be the belligerent stand-off with Abadi - & suggestions that Abadi could ask Putin for assistance. Erdogan insists he's protecting Iraqi Sunnis - which is exactly what militarists tend to say before invading neighbours.

it's 80 miles from the Turkish border - is that realistic?

Depends on how prepared they are to imitate the Soviets in Afghanistan, and heavy-lift or convoy most of their requirements into Mosul. 80 miles is a long supply line when someone with a SAM might be waiting for your supply planes, and his mates with RPGs might be lining the roads.

KRG/Turkey thing to apply pressure on baghdad really. See Erdogan demanding iraqi central govt pay wages of KRG public workers after they were cut off. Militarily i can't see this meaning a single thing but give erdogan the opp to post as defender of sunni muslims (part of the wider regional conflict with saudi). Barzani and talabani theives get the go-ahead to continue smuggling of all types - and they might just get a bonus if Iraq pays up.

pretty grim viewing :-(

Police camera footage of an incident in which a Turkish woman was shot and killed during an operation at her family’s home has been included in the file of a case opened into special operation police officer Y.M.
Dilek Doğan was shot at her home in Sarıyer on Oct. 18 during a police raid, succumbing to her injuries on Oct. 25.
The footage shows police officers with balaclavas conducting a search of the Doğan residence. Although the shooting is not shown, arguments are heard in the background in the video. A man is heard yelling, “What did I tell you!” to which a woman -- presumably Dilek -- responds, “What are you doing?” Then, a shot is heard and chaos ensues. Dilek's mother is seen losing control and screaming. A man, presumed to be Dilek's brother, enters in a fit of rage and punches a police officer. The police officers then shout orders to handcuff the man.

Good for them.
Anonymous has launched a cyberwar with Turkey, accusing it of supporting Islamic State.

The 'hacktivist' collective posted a video message warning Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of future attacks to the country's banks, airports and government sites.

Last week, at least 400,000 websites were affected by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack when servers were overloaded with traffic.

A previously announced 'red line' for Turkey has been crossed then.

YPG spokesman Polat Can supposedly posted this pic of himself looking for the red line.

Suspicion that AKP has responded by flooding villages along the Euphrates, using the Ataturk Dam. Story here.
