has now won best small indoor market is a National Competition Great British Market Awards - Nabma This small south London market has been named the best in the country

Is this a coincidence or is that me being cynical. In any event it's worked for me as I have not been there for a while and must make a point of doing so.

Crossrail 2 has some serious overground issues. It's going to tear Soho apart.

I'm conflicted though because I know it has to be built. There does seem to be a trend to overdue the surface affect of these projects. Look at how big Bermondsey Jubilee line station is for example. It's a whole block and it's not a really busy station.

Oh no! I didn't know either of those things. I've been worried about something like the second of those, because it might go the same way as Brixton, but I'd never even considered someone might want turn it into a ventilation shaft.

I get your point, your parents and their neighbours much be really worried, but Tooting market has got a long way to go before it's anything like as bad as Brixton.

fewer cars on street: better provision for cyclists, more buses, socialisation of housing, dispersal of offices etc from the centre throughout the city so not fewer people going to the middle of london.

It is a Crossrail ventilation shaft that is threatening Tooting Market.

I don't think any firm decisions have been made yet as to whether the ventilation should be in Balham (in the middle of Wandsworth Common, I think) or Tooting (in the middle of the market).

I went into the market for the first time in ages today
All crappy food joints and nail bars. I turned and walked out after seeing the noodle bar thing and the craft beer bottle bar wotsit.

I don't know why but I have a gut feeling if they don't 'blow it all up and start again' I think the bottom will fall out of london, and all those rich bastards will do a mass exodus at some point because there wont be any staff that will work for less than it costs to live. That means all their luxuries go out the window (since cleaners, bar staff, restaurant staff, coffeeshop baristas, etc wont be able to afford to live) and they wont find London a nice place to live anymore.

Gentrification really is destroying the city, and with inflation, brexit, and the current economic climate I think a storms'a'brewing. I think it will take some time but the picture isn't looking good long term...

It will still be slightly sadder than you expect.

They're trying to style it on Brixton, I'm sure, but it has a long way to go. I don't think it has the night-time crowd yet, though it stays open till 10.30pm these days.

I was talking to a client about it a short while ago...she remembers the market from 30 odd years ago. It sounded a little different to how I can remember it, yet Alone what it's turning into. Will it be much of a loss if it falls to crossrail?

The guy who apparently owned the marked in the 1980's was a well known critic of BR - (he travelled up from Brighton each day) ,and was so incensed with the smoking ban on trains , set up an unofficial smoking club in the brakevans of the then slam door stock. Made the Substandad for a bit - then died out.

My Dad had a unit selling fabric in tooting market (and a shop which is now the cafe nero) - I used to play on the tills as a kid and generally get in the way - so I have a lot of sentimental love for it. I begrudging prefer it living on, albeit gentrified,than dying on its arse and being pulled down for flats (or crossrail) and until recently it was very quiet and under occupied.
