Three die at St Patrick's disco at Greenvale Hotel in Cookstown, Northern Ireland

Super Refuser!
BBC News report of two young people dead, and others, reported as ill rather than injured.

Two dead at hotel's St Patrick's party

A multi agency incident is under way at Greenvale Hotel, Cookstown. ACC Mark Hamilton said: “I can confirm there are 2 fatalities at this stage and a small no of other casualties. Parents are asked to collect children from Family and Friends reception at Glenavon Hotel.”

Dreadful. :(

Local reports spoke of a 'stampede' but the BBC has a different take

It had been widely suggested on social media that several young people had sustained crush injuries.

However, a journalist at the scene, Brendan Marshall, said the DJ who was performing at the event insisted to him that this was not the case.

"He confirmed that - contrary to the rumours that had been circulating - there had been no crushing and nothing had collapsed," Mr Marshall told BBC News NI.

"He told me that a number of young people had become seriously ill. He said one young person was brought to him by a friend to have their pulse checked.

"The DJ then shone a light in their eyes to check whether they were alive."

It’s always sad to hear when people have been out enjoying themselves and things like this happen.
:(

Seems to be talk of a fight being the trigger point. So sad.

BBC are saying that seems to be a confusion of struggling at the front. Press of people trying to get in, which I suppose would also explain why the dj wasn’t aware of it.

400 people trying to push through this gate

include drugs, alcohol, teenage exuberance and possibly a fight causing the crowd to surge away from it

how the fuck is that building suppose to house 400 people

:hmm:

Two men aged 52 and 40 arrested and charged with corporate manslaughter. Anyone know what that’s likely to be?

Two men arrested following Co Tyrone hotel crush

Gross breach of duty of care... an indifference to an obvious risk to health, that was foreseeable and that they ignored. Probably, looking at Ax's pic above, that they should have had much better management of entrances... I imagine they'd be looking at past events and reports of overcrowding in that area, numbers, access times etc.

Obviously investigation to follow, so that's pure speculation.

Reports here saying the teenagers were banging on windows and doors asking staff inside to open the locked gate...shouting that kids were getting hurt. Obviously they were getting crushed against the gate and walls.
Looks like there was no security staff or people on hand outside the venue at all.

Dreadful thing to happen to those poor kids :(

:(

They did not want they filtering in and out of the main hotel so funnelled them to
a tiny locked gate

and did not see the problem with inviting 400 people yet alone older teenagers on St Patrick day..

probably done it for years but it only takes one bad night

The psni said the crush lasted for several minutes, plenty of time for staff to do something about it.

Shocking stuff - the organisation/staffing of the event looks like it was a bit shit for a start. Can’t imagine how awful it would have been to be under a pile of bodies unable to breathe.

The sort of event that gives any one involved in organisation or planning for such events cold sweats at night, and if it doesn’t they shouldn’t be anywhere near the organisation. Crowd accidents are horribley nightmarish. They are hardly ever the ‘stampedes’ described in the press but normally an aggregation of pressure against a barrier or through a choke point. Very slight pressure caused by ‘normal’ pushing and jostling at the back can amplify through a surprisingly few rows of people to pressures that can bend steel crush barriers at the front. Can be mitigated easily by planning the location, very clear communication at the venue and good stewarding. Almost all crowd disasters lack these things. No excuse at a pre -planned venue like this, but corporate manslaughter is a very high bar to clear, unfortunately.

It is the owner of the hotel & a bouncer who have been arrested.

The penny just dropped that my previous employer’s engineers and machinists used to stay at this hotel when working on the local Industrial estate. They spoke very highly of it.

I'm guessing its the bouncer but a 52 year old man related to this incident

has been charged with possession of Class A drug with intent to supply
