Whatever you think of Assad, he could have run when things were going a lot worse for him than now, and could have gotten a very cushy deal at that I don't doubt. Perhaps our view of Assad isn't the simple caricature who just wants grubby money and some power to torture underlings with isn't in line with reality. I reckon Assad actually does believe he is protecting his country, remember you don't have to be "a good person" to actually believe in something even if it might cost you your life. I just think it's time we in the West stopped imagining foreign leaders we don't like as just grubby hand-rubbing mustache-twirling little rat-people who are just in it for the money and power and then wonder why they don't act as our cartoon-characterizations predict they will.
