The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

I use 50p coins or a key, just in case. It's worrying if they've started to do this, I'm concerned that they've never thought of using razors until the news gave them the idea.

This is something I've often heard of wrt fascist stickers etc, never actually seen it in the wild though.

Good article from Monbiot today. I've been a bit disappointed with the number of lefty/alternative/psychedelic friends who buy into anti-vaxx bullshit and maybe beyond in some cases!

To be honest I think it's more a case of people with a vague hippyish anti-authoritarianism having been considered left-wing than of left-wingers in general turning to anti-vax stuff. I've certainly known plenty of people whose politics didn't get much beyond their right to get wankered in a field who would consider themselves to be a bit lefty and I wouldn't be surprised to see any of them going anti-vax.

'My Body, My Choice' spraypainted on the side of a house near me.

Doesn't look like freedom of choice extends to other people's homes and how they'd prefer them to look...
'Covid is a lie' was spray painted on the side of a house in my town.

It was there for ages. Has only just been painted over.

We've also had the odd bit of grafitti saying ' the vaccine will kill you!'

Yeah, he also captures that slide into anti-authoritarianism on the right. I saw a bloke a few months ago wearing a T-shirt with some slogan about questioning everything and mulled on the fact that 20 years ago I would have assumed him to be of some kind of leftist persuasion but now who knows...

I suppose there's the traditional right and the Trumpist kinda right.

With most ppl in the west vaccinated, this is now morphing into a pandemic of the unvaccinated . If a raft of these antivaxxer types now get rubbed out by C19 (especially the more vocal ones with a platform to spread their bullshit), I won't be shedding any tears for them ...

was listening to a Qanon expert the other day saying how the "question everything" as an attitude has clearly a long and important history in the field of science, politics, general rational discourse. of course it's one of the most important things that a human being can do.

he said however, in these types of communities, the "question everything" or "question authority" is taken almost to a pathological conclusion and manifests in things like is "Joe Biden real and not a robot?", deep states hidden, fake actors everywhere, white hats, etc. Thus taking it away from it's worthy roots into the Fruit and Nut Bar Realm. That instead of essential rational exploration of assumptions and the disputation of evidence, values inherent in any semi-intelligent person, it is really just paranoid and "i can see through the whole game of everythign, aren't i special" thinking.

"question everythign" is a bit of a red flag these days init, lol

Yes, and they're the type of extremists that make it easier to dismiss those with a valid reason to challenge something. They can fuck up a wet dream.

Friend of mine is a nurse. She is caring for someone in their twenties who is in icu with covid but still refusing to believe it exists!

So weird. What do they think their illness is, given that (I guess) they are presenting with typical Covid symptoms and have tested positive for it...

Must be annoying for nurses and doctors having to care for people who could most likely have avoided being hospitalised if they'd been vaccinated.

Was reading this morning about a patient being refused chemotherapy because of a lack of staff or funds...

Was talking to a friend recently about 9/11, she's convinced it was an 'inside job' and said something like "anyone who can't see that the towers weren't demolished by explosives must be simple"

I replied with "I assume the intense heat of the exploding planes' fuel melted the towers' supporting girders" but added "neither of us are engineers or architects so we don't really know exactly what happened".

She wasn't having it, basically said "lots of (or all!) engineers have refuted the official version of events". She was filled with complete certainty, no room for discussion or debate, whereas I was saying "I don't know because I'm not an expert".

I guess when someone is filled with that level of certainty, their minds have to jump through hoops to maintain the internal logic of their belief, in the face of all evidence to the contrary.

The other side though of course is that there's still absolutely loads of things they take as read and don't question at all. Donald Trump's massive pile of lies for starters.

I used to have a document that compared numbers of engineers who agree with the conspiracy narrative, with the number of members of engineering professional bodies. I researched and wrote it myself about 12 years ago. If I can find it I'll post it here but IIRC it was something like 0.3% of registered engineers in the US who had expressed support via the 911truth.org site. Minuscule numbers.

0.3 per cent! Sounds about right :D My friend's reaction is, I think, another variation on the 'we've had enough of experts' schtick. My suggestion that "since neither of us are engineers we can't really pronounce upon the subject" was met with short shrift, since she reckons she can make up her own mind / do her own research, and that her opinion is as valid as that of a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Er, no it isn't.

Similarly, most of us are quite happy to admit we have limited knowledge of epidemiology or virology so will follow expert opinion and guidance, but a sizeable minority think they can decide for themselves and have decided that (for example) masks are ineffective / Covid is "no worse than flu" / there's no such thing as Covid etc etc

Some Anti Vaxxers including Dolores Cahill and some FOTL nutcases got a covid patient released from hospital in Donegal. The man returned to hospital and died
