The Murder of Daniel Morgan - tell me more.

Kaka Tim

Half Arsed and Slapdash till I Die
Daniel Morgan's murder keeps coming up in realtion to the whoie news international, met police furore.

The various threads are covering lots of different, but inter-connected stories so I've found it quite difficult to piece all the bits together.

My understanding is that Morgan was murdered whilst investigating police corruprion and that several subsequnet investigations got nowhere due to alleged corruption.

Also chief suspect Jonathon Rees was connected with Andy Coulson and News Interntaional journalists were somehow connected with the failed investigations (targetting investigating officers or something?)

It all seems very murky but Im not sure how it all links up - can someone give some more detail and wether its the even greater scandal at the heart of the current shit storm.

Morgan wasn't investigating police corruption for a client, he was investigating it off his own bat because he believed that his partner had dragged their business into the shit, buying info and "services" off a bunch on coppers at the Regional Crime Squad. Many of the same blokes have been "grassed" by each other as they've done deals to keep themselves out of nick. Sensible, if even a quarter of the stories about fit-ups by South East Regional Crime Squad officers were true.

There's a piece about it on the 'Transpontine' blog here

From that blog -

The Guardian also reported this week that then News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks was 'summoned to a meeting at Scotland Yard where she was told that one of her most senior journalists, Alex Marunchak, had apparently agreed to use photographers and vans leased to the paper to run surveillance on behalf of Jonathan Rees and Sid Fillery, two private investigators who were suspected of murdering another investigator, Daniel Morgan, when the latter was a partner of Rees's in the firm Southern Investigations. The Yard saw this as a possible attempt to pervert the course of justice. Brooks was also told of evidence that Marunchak had a corrupt relationship with Rees, who had been earning up to £150,000 a year selling confidential data to the News of the World. Police told her that a former employee of Rees had given them a statement alleging that some of these payments were diverted to Marunchak, who had been able to pay off his credit card and pay his child's private school.

A Guardian investigation suggests that surveillance of Detective Chief Superintendent David Cook involved the News of the World physically following him and his young children, "blagging" his personal details from police databases, attempting to access his voicemail and that of his wife, and possibly sending a "Trojan horse" email in an attempt to steal information from his computer. The targeting of Cook began following his appearance on BBC Crimewatch on 26 June 2002, when he appealed for information to solve the murder of Morgan, who had been found dead in south London 15 years earlier. Rees and Fillery were among the suspects. The following day, Cook was warned by the Yard that they had picked up intelligence that Fillery had been in touch with Marunchak and that Marunchak agreed to "sort Cook out"' (Guardian, 6 July 2011). Fillery and Rees were later acquitted of all charges relating to Morgan's murder. Cook was actually heading the latest investigation into this murder, while apparently being targeted by the News of the World.

Marunchak, it was just revealed on channel 4 news, was employed by the met as an interpretor between 1980 and 2000. May mean nothing many mean something.

I dont get it, theres lots of people close to the hacking clusterfuck who are also connected with the daniel morgan case. I reading hints that its not coincidence but cant join the dots - and are Channel 4 news nodding and winking about this or is it my imagination?

Question - why did NoftheW hacks have Cook and Jacqui Hames under surveilance? The utterly lame excuse that they thought they were having an affair (they were husband and wife) just makes it sound even more suspect. The inescapable conclusion it that people connected with NOTW were trying to scupper the murder investigation.

Andy Hayman was head of CIB3, the ghost squad, when the Guardian was doing an investigation into it and wrote a letter to them telling them two of their reporters were colluding with suspects in the case to pervert the course of justice.

The Guardian dropped that investigation and the journalists who later wrote a book that exposed a series of cockups by CIB3.

Loads of familiar names float around that team. Hell even the Lawrence inquiry makes an appearance care of Yates who failed to connect Davidson (the original detective on the lawrence murder) with Norris's dad when he was head of CIB3 and investigating the failures of the original murder investigation.

(IIRC Yates was cleared by the IPCC of screwing up his part of the Lawrence inquiry)

Ah - so the case that the two guardian reporters were warned off was the same case?

Right so people within the met and NI were trying to undermine the murder investigation because the two suspects had connections within both organisations?

Would that be a reasonable hypothesis?

Does why morgan was offed have any relevance? Or is that too long ago for that to be the case?

If you want to know more, look in the South London Press archives. It was their dogged persistence (along with Morgan's family and friends) that kept awareness of this case alive (in South London anyway).

Its like fucking edge of darkness or something.

Or a brit version of a James Ellroy novel ... mind-bending stuff though.

Assuming for a moment that "they" did bump off Hoare as a David Kelly style discouragement to further whistleblowing ... it may well backfire if it causes the Morgan case to get closer attention while this shit is at the top of the media agenda.

Looks like either the source server has collapsed, or the NI tech people got onto it.... but here it is as a cut and paste...

[THIS WAS A HACK, NOT REAL!]

"Rupert Murdoch, the controversial media mogul, has reportedly been found dead in his garden, police announce.

"Murdoch, aged 80, has said to have ingested a large quantity of palladium before stumbling into his famous topiary garden late last night, passing out in the early hours of the morning."

"We found the chemicals sitting beside a kitchen table, recently cooked," one officer states. "From what we can gather, Murdoch melted and consumed large quantities of it before exiting into his garden."

Chemicals found in house

Authorities would not comment on whether this was a planned suicide, though the general consensus among locals and unnamed sources is that this is the case.
One detective elaborates. "Officers on the scene report a broken glass, a box of vintage wine, and what seems to be a family album strewn across the floor, containing images from days gone by; some containing handpainted portraits of Murdoch in his early days, donning a top hat and monocle."

Another officer reveals that Murdoch was found slumped over a particularly large garden hedge fashioned into a galloping horse. "His favourite", a butler, Davidson, reports.

Butler Davidson has since been taken into custody for additional questioning."

I can't even go for a quiet dump without some new happening, and in this case it is a hack. Few hours ago it was a body. Few before that and it was a senior met bo falling on sword. The shitstorm of the decade so far

I sometimes think about that multiple universe theory in which the universe constantly splits into an infinite amount of alternative timelines. Then I wonder what it would be like to be on one of those timelines where everything that happens is just so batshit crazy that the world appears upside down. Maybe this is it. I do hope so.

Yup, and in fact he'd uncovered a whole network of corrupt cops, informers and private dicks in SE London - and was on the verge of blowing the roof off it, when he was found in the pub car park, axe in head. Both Rees and ex-detective sergeant Sid Fillery were part of that network, and in it up to their necks

But why the fuck isn't this story all over the place (besides C4)?

This is why I've given up on crime fiction - the truth is much more lurid. David Peace could be writing this stuff.

to continue....
That network in fact included gangsters who the cops were shielding, for money.

The key thing about Danny Morgan, is that there were no less than FIVE police investigations, the first two tainted by police corruption. At the time of the first investigation, fillery was still a police officer, having conveniently failed to inform the brass that he moonlighted for Southwern Investigations (Rees' and Morgan's firm). Indeed, after leaving the force, he became Rees' new partner in the firm.

In fact, the disastrous way all five investigations were handled has led most observers to conclude that police corruption was a constant throughout.
Rees, filleery and 2 local heavies were finally charged, but the case collapsed - due to police mishandling - in 2010.

In the meantime, Rees - who had also done a 7-stretch for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice - had started working for the NOTW, with a direct connection to Coulson

Until the case finally collapsed, all matters relating to it were sub judice. However, the Guardian had kept tabs on what was going on - and Alan Rusbridger warned Steve Hilton - Cameron's policy chief - about Coulson's connection to Rees, at the time when cameron was on the verge of confirming his new job in No 10.
THAT is why the ghost of Danny Morgan now looms large over No 10

But why the fuck isn't this story all over the place (besides C4)?
because it is labyrinthine complex and obscure, the murder happened in 1987, Rees eventually walked, and because you have to wade through a fair bit to get to the key point; Rees' connection to Coulson

But why the fuck isn't this story all over the place (besides C4)?

It has been, but it gets buried. It got brought up after Stephen Laurence's murder, and again when Norris Sr got sent down. It got dug up again when a serving Regional Crime Squad detective was nicked for dealing coke and tried to buy himself a lighter sentence by ratting out some of his mates.

The big problem is that there was little forensic evidence to start of with, and most of that has been "lost", so the only way Morgan's killers will probably come to justice is if they incriminate themselves.

I wish it was out there, more. Everyone I've tried to explain it to (probably badly) think it's make believe!
Oh no, it's real, and an absolute 24-year scandal.
Also, a not on the Transpontine blog quoted from extensively: Rees, Fillery and the Vians were NOT acquitted as in 'found not guilty by a jury'; due to the completely farcical mess the Police had made of it - and due to probable Police corruption - the CPS had to drop the charges way before the trial reached that point, as a safe trial was now impossible, due to the prosecution not giving the defence all the info and documents that they were required to by law.
