The Meat-Free Breakfast thread.

I tried tofu scramble - a pre made one. It was surprisingly alright! Hit the protein spot. Anyone made their own?
This is my veggie breakfast from last Sunday.

Toast, veggie Lincolnshire sausages, beans, grilled tomato, veggie bacon, tofu scramble and mushrooms.

I made the Lincolnshire sausages from this mix, the scramble is silken tofu with garlic and onion powder, turmeric, nutritional yeast, and salt and pepper. The veggie bacon is tofurkey slices marinated in olive oil and paprika and then cooked on a griddle pan.

Here's my recipe:

In a frying pan add some oil before crumbling in a block of silken tofu. Break it up with a wooden spoon until it starts to resemble the texture of scrambled eggs. Then add some turmeric (this is what makes it yellow!) some garlic and onion powder and some salt and pepper. Then it's ready to serve - it literally takes a matter of minutes. If you can get hold of some nutritional yeast that makes it even better.

edit, just noticed the recipe was already in my initial post

Have you ever used kala namak salt Jeff? It's supposed to give an eggy taste due to its sulphur content.

Yes I have, it didn't have much of an effect on me as I have no sense of smell! Opinion is very divided on it: some find it too pungent, others think it really gives a good egg-like flavour.

this might sound like a silly question but if you cant smell whats your sense of taste like?

Tried the Iceland "No Porkies" sausages for Nate - they were a bit like Lindas, but TINY! He has defaulted back to quorn sausages on the basis of them being most sausage-like, a firm texture that has many different uses (they can withstand toad in the hole treatment, which is the gold standard).

I've often been left in wonder about his love for "orange hockey pucks" hash browns from the freezer cabinet - turns out this is because they are a known quantity - the "chef" where he works rarely caters for vegetarians and does a horrible job with most other food, apparently the hash browns are usually the best non-meat thing available - sorry state of affairs really (I know care homes are not necessary going to have a top chef in the kitchen, but when the frozen orange hockey pucks are the best thing, that's just awful)

I'm all over Fry's meat-free sausages at the moment, lovely taste to em! And also tried the Fry's steak pies last week but they were too realistic in a gristly, chewy, beefy kinda way, and it puts me off does that.:(

Will give those a go - it's just me that is fussy about veggie sausages though, and I do eat meat ones so it's not a problem that I haven't found a veggie one that I like (more just a washing up dishes issue) - if he is happy with quorn ones that is ok, if he goes off those he'll let me know :)

Same here with the frys pies. Plus they are drowned in pepper and that was all I could taste. I do like all other frys stuff though. Schnitzels are really nice and quick to cook when feeling lazy.

They're awful. I can't understand how they got the no bull burgers so good and failed miserably on them?

He tried the no bull burgers too and wasn't keen - he ate them with the help of lots of cheese, condiments, gherkins, onions, and tomatoes :D But they didn't get a resounding thumbs up.

(I don't think he has the most refined palate in the world tbh - he'll scarf down almost anything as long as it's not meat, and junk food is preferred - like feeding a human version of a labrador really  )

Next time I do a fry up (the chance of me cooking anything at a time that could be designated as "breakfast" is slim to none, but there is nothing wrong with having a fry up for tea!) I will take photos to show meat version and veggie version - meat photo for the FEB thread (although it will be ripped to shreds, because I am not buying bacon for 1!) and veggie version photo for this thread.

I liked the Iceland ones. If they are small, you just have more of them.

My favourites are Cauldron and Tofurkey Italian style sausages.

They are £2 for 8 tiny sausages though, that is outrageous - have more - yeah great if you can afford it!

(Sorry, didn't mean to sound that grumpy - Quorn ones are better value).

I don't know how much the Quorn ones are, but 25p a sausage is pretty reasonable.

The quorn ones are also about £2 for 8, but they are proper sausage size - I mean maybe I got a bad pack of the no porkies, but they were tiny - more like cocktail sausages. I tried one, they tasted fine, they were just tiny.

I just checked and No Porkies are £10 per kilo!!!! and quorn sausages are £5.54 per kilo - that pretty much sums it up.

I have gone off veggie sausages, probably ate too many. I’m not a cooked breakfast fan but had a veggie sausage sarnie for years. Started with Asda Lincolnshire ones, then quorn, then cauldron, then quorn butchers & now these ones in the photo. I like them skinny. Quorn do a chipolata version that are similar for about £1.70 with Aldi being the most consistent place to buy them.

I also buy Sainsbury’s shroom dogs but not for sarnie that’s a mashed potato sausage.
