The Labour Conference

i don't believe anyone who remains in the labour party with the stated aim of 'reclaiming' it is in any position to tell other people they're often wrong.
I'm not sure there is any alternative - at the electoral level - at least at this stage. If there was a significant break away from the unions that would be different. You lot offer nothing but "you're all shit".

God knows why I have his speech on but I do. It's such a load of guff sound bytes. There's fuck all substance or spine in it. There's absolutely nothing that makes me think 'oh yeah how inspiring I'll vote for ya.' Meh indeed.

Who do you vote for then? Not Labour, not Conservative, certainly not Lib Dem... so, who do you vote for?

Conference reacts to Ed Balls saying he will extend the cap on child benefit even longer than the Tories already are

I saw that lady on the news, 'jaw dropped' exactly describes it.

Anyone seriously believe that Labour will repeal anything the tories have done? Really?

The only difference I predict will be a bit more tax and spend (on things like the NHS) which isn't a bad thing so long as the tax comes from the right place.

Benefits and the like won't change under Labour. In fact it was them that started the "stricter benefit regime" the Tories just picked it up and ran with it as you would expect them to do.
So then it's better to vote labour in and get the tories out.

Admittedly not by much.

But saying taht labour will repeal nothing is OTT imo.

come the GE my vote will be going to the crudely drawn cock and balls party (spunking). I've held my nose in a local and gone for sawford jnr once because he's old school left labour like his old man was when he was still in politics (possibly dead, I haven't checked). 8 quid an hour by 2020, continued austerity policies except maybe make noises about bedroom tax but we all know that would be reneged upon. Waste of anyones time, new boss same as etc

Shame on them for using Harry Smith's life in such a crude manner. What a fucking neoliberal disgrace they are.

if only not voting meant something

Will you still be voting Labour even after the conference has seen no repudiation of austerity measures, lengthening the child benefit cap and hoofing disabled people out of their chairs to make way for the more important people? A min wage pledge that is as meaningless now as it would be in 2020 if they had any intention of following through on it?

Yes.

Because the Tories will be much worse.

I fully agree it's hobson's choice and the lesser of two evils etc. But I would rather live with that vote than face another five years of this government. In fact the likelihood will be a tory majority which will be a thousand times worse.

I think it quite likley Labour will repeal the BT actually. Whether they will honour everything they pledge (whatever that may be) I don't know, but this I think so. The tories wont' repeal it. I'd much rather deal with Reeves than the inhuman cunt that is IDS. I'm well aware of what she has said in the past (some of which has been taken out of context tbf), and she doesn't even compare to the mixture of malevolence hatred and incompetence that is IDS.

I believe this has been pounded into you ad infinitum but don't you see that voting for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil?

No, its that there is no choice - there is no way for posters vote to practically effect the outcome of their local votes. It's not about lesser evils ffs.; Your vote in your seat counts for fuck all. So this clown admonishing people in safe seats for not voting labour is point missing stupidity. Whether they vote labour or not changes nothing. The result is already decided. You have no role in the outcome no matter what you do.

Remember who started the attack on benefits. Remember who started the attack on Civil Service pay. Remember whose lack of effective regulation of the banks, created this shit-storm in the first place. Remember who marched into the lobby alongside the Conservatives, to vote to maintain an overall welfare cap.

I return to my original question:

'Who is there to vote for?'.

There is a second question:

Why does the grass-roots Labour movement, which is still Labour, tolerate the behaviour of the apparatchiks in Westminster? Also, why do the trades unions, who are financing the Labour party, and whose members were severely disadvantaged by the last Labour government's pay policy regarding the Civil Service, still affiliated, and still funding them?

I suppose the real question is: When is the left wing of politics going to grow a pair, and demand a return to socialist values?

I've seen a few governments come and go. Churchill was PM when I was born. In general, those at the bottom of the heap got a bit of a leg up when Labour were in power, and those a bit further up the ladder got a boost when the Conservatives were in. Now, it matters not who is in, those below oligarch level are increasingly disadvantaged.

The future does not look at all good, unless, either Labour regains its socialist ethos, or, a new socialist party is formed.

I don't see Iraq and Afghanistan as being inherently wrong, what was wrong was the failure, to accurately predict, what would happen when the fighting was over (yes, I know it is still ongoing).

The world is better place without Hussein, or should be. With hindsight, it might have been better to leave him in place.
