The Great Tesco Takeover of Pubs - list them here

The Vernon Arms in Nottingham, which has looked like a failing pub for a long time, has been sold to Sainbury's, who are turning it into a supermarket.

Many pubs in the area have closed in recent years. It's quite sad. Saddest of all, one pub (on the corner of Gregory Boulevard and Alfreton Road) was turned into a mosque.

Well being turned into religious community centres is the next best bet after a Tesco/Sainsbury's :D

The Telegraph on Brixton Hill (a big old pub) is a churchy type place now

I was Christened in this one. :D

The Whitworth in Rusholme, Manchester is now a religious centre.

There seems to be more and more evangelical type religious centres popping up :hmm:

Have they converted any synagogues.........?

There aren't that many to begin with, to be fair. :)

I can think of one that's now a private home, but that was pretty much sold as derelict in the early '80s because it'd been subject to arson a couple of times in the '70s. Any rumours that it had anything to do with acolytes of Martin Webster, then-leader of the NF, who lived about 200 yeards away, were strongly denied by Mr. Webster, who claimed "we're not criminals!".

Laugh? I nearly vomited.

NO!!!!!! That must have been pretty recent as they were putting on gigs there not so long ago.
I went there before every matchday for about ten years.

Also sad to see the Feathers in Chorlton go. That was a lovely old pub.

Also read Sainsbury's have take over on in Withington. Which one was that?

Don't want to hijack the thread but in South Yorkshire/Derbyshire, Thornbridge Brewery is buying up all the pubs, etc, its part owned by Emma Harrison's/A4E husband and i'm sure she is involved..

Maybe they could employ some fit-for-work quadruple amputees to pull pints? :hmm:

There's a big Bangla cash and carry/supermarket on Brick Lane or Commercial St that used to be a synagogue - you can see some Hebrew script at the back, carved in stone IIRC. It's actually a rather good shop, lots of kitchen utensils

the orange tree, friern barnet

there used to be four or five pubs in friern barnet, the orange tree's a tescos, the duck became a restaurant about 20 years ago, the triumph seems shut down, and the next pub nearer woodhouse college is members only. i think there's some small pub there: but nothing to right home about.
FFS is that a Tescos now? There's a massive Tescos half a mile down the road by the North Circular. GRRR. Also, not far away is/was the Rising Sun, Oakleigh Road North, N20

Tesco don't care they built a superstore on elstree studios back lot.Wealdstone football ground another tesco

whats the one in West Norwood near the cemetery? that became a Tesco didn't it.

Also, Mcdonalds do this as well.

Ilkeston Road, not Ilkeston. In Ilkeston it would probably be called Nottingham Road.... :p

The Tescos I pictured is on Ilkeston Road, Radford, Nottingham.

It had a piraty sounding name I think but can't remember quite what.

Further back towards town it looks as though The Peacock is also going to be Tesco'd if it hasn't already.

And in keeping with the gentrification of the area, the longstanding Yardie pub The Gregory that got closed down recently is set to become student accommodation.
