The Generic Tennis Thread

Weird one , I wasn't aware of her name until she launched this law suit, which in itself damages her reputation. No one seriously thought she'd had 700 drinks whatever her name is .
I was the same. When I saw the headline I remembered he'd complained to the umpire but I didn't think there was anything in the coverage which showed her in the crowd  . I only know her name now because of the law suit.

This point…

I just couldn't bring myself to stay up for Alcaraz v Sinner!

Alcaraz has a great chance of going the whole way.

With all the 'Big 3' (now surely history?) plus Medvedev being absent or knocked out, the men's side is wider open than it's been for years.

Going to tune in to Garcia v Jabeur shortly. Garcia looked fantastic the other night and I wasn't expecting Jabeur to be winning so decisively so far.

Alcaraz beats Ruud.

Commentators all saying that this is the new era in men's tennis with these two plus Sinner and one or two others. Got to agree. Great stuff from both of them. Running down everything, imaginative shotmaking and totally fearless. Some amazing gets from both players.

It's skipping a generation, it seems. Be interesting to see if Djokovic can live with this lot when he comes back.

It is finally happenning (the changing of the guard).

Djoko might carry on playing in a bid to get two more majors, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nadal and Federer have retired within six months.

I sort of already think of Federer as retired. A while ago I heard a pundit make the point that, given the kind of game he plays, he could probably make a good living on the circuit well into his 50s if he wanted to, but his days of challenging for slams are well over.

Always going to happen sooner rather than later, but the end of an era, even though he hasn't been playing for a couple of years.

Indisputably an all-time great. I wonder what he'll do next.

Even as a big Nadal fan I have always argued that Fed’s natural and exquisite talent across all aspects of the game are unparalleled, and count as much in any GOAT debate as the number grand slams collected.

But then I have always hated GOAT debates anyway. They are as pointless as highly subjective, not to mention ultimately demeaning to the two others. Fed, Nadal and Djokovic are as superlative as each other, and have treated us to the greatest era of men’s tennis in history. I salute you, Roger. One of the all-time greatest, an absolute magician of the sport.

Great effort from Murray just now. Understandably he can’t be expected to win matches nowadays against top-20 in-form players at their physical prime. And obviously he’s been invited to play here for legacy reasons rather than on current form or standings. Still, some of the best attacking gameplay and crowd-pleasing winners I’ve seen from him in a long time.

Federer’s farewell match coming up next!

Really wish I could watch but AFAIK it's only on Eurosport/Discovery and I cancelled my subscription recently.

Fantastically entertaining match. Everyone from both teams have had a big smile on their faces throughout the day, because ultimately this is a glorified exhibition tournament, and far more so because it is really such a momentous occasion with Federer’s farewell and all.

They’re a break down in the second set and logic tells us they should lose the match to a pair of much younger top-20 players. Nadal is clearly less than fully fit, and Roger 41 and unable to play more than the one doubles match all tournament. But ultimately the result matters not of course.

The talk of changing of the guard has been happening for at least 5 years, but the Big 3/4 clinged on and scooped up more majors between them, their superiority seemingly insurmountable. But I think this is it; the close of one great era, will hopefully bring the dawn of another, with alcaraz looking to lead the pack. I see Nadal and possibly Murray retiring next year and Novak a couple years after, depending on their health and hunger to stay competitive. The GOAT debate is always controversial, but for me, Federer, with all he's achieved on and off court, the way he's beautified the game, transcended the sport, is the GOAT.

Let's hope he stays in the sport: talk of coaching young Swisse players, commentating, exhibition/charity events abound. But no doubt some much needed rest and family time.

I was supporting Team Europe but perfectly happy with the outcome. Great boost to the attractiveness of the tournament after having been so one sided throughout, and fucking blockbuster, edge-of-seat tennis this weekend. This is a glorified exhibition gig, and yet both the players and spectators have been so intensely engaged in the best possible way.

Not to mention fast action, a relaxed and happy atmosphere, behind-the-scenes live footage of the players, and having the deciding set of any match settled by a 10-point tie break instead of playing a final set. All of which amounting to fantastically good fun and as it tuned out incredible tennis.

Anyone watching the Murray match?

Match of the tournament so far for me.
I'm working but am keeping an eye on the score.

I did see one point where Murray was retrieving Kokkinakis' smashes until he got back in the point and won it.

It's gone 3 am there and they've just started the 5th set! It's ridiculous to be playing so late.

Listening on BBC R5. 3.45am and there's still potentially another 3 games and a tiebreak to go!

Longest match of Murray's career.
