The decline in sales of men’s combs

Never had one but used to like those metal combs. They seemed to offer makeshift weapon potential.

I threw out the last plastic comb I owned some time ago. It had not seen service for many years...

Not sure about the Brylcreem vs. gel thing. I mean, I use a touch of old-fashioned wax and it does the job without needing a comb. I just think that specific look that a comb gives - the neat little, almost cornrow-like lines of hair - has gone out of fashion.

I own a red plastic comb.

It has seen better days.

Sometimes comb my beard and tash with it before trimming ..

:)

Men don’t have pocket combs any more. Our hair is either too short, and we just run our fingers through it after showering, or if we have elaborately coiffed hair, it’s set with product and doesn’t require adjusting through the day.

There is a very particular reason why I’ve not needed to buy a new comb for the last twenty years and it ain’t any of those..!

:D

My late fa-in-law always had a comb in his pocket. Never had a hat or scarf or gloves, when he came to visit us on the coast but, into his 80s, always had a comb and would comb his hair from time to time when we were out. In his youth he had aspirations to being a teddy boy, had a motorbike, herself’s parents weren’t sure about him…
Luckily for him he didn’t lose his hair but it did go grey, even though he insisted he was still blond. This all makes him sound like a huge presence; he really wasn’t. He was a shy man and had grown up with health issues, and never very brainy at school (his words) but into his old age very proud of his full head of hair. This thread has really reminded me of him ❤️

I'm completely befuzzled by the thought that there are specifically mens combs, and not just combs.
I'm generally confused about the purpose of one. If I had long hair sure it helps untangling stuff I assume? But doesn't a brush do the same better. Unless someone fancies the elvis look or comb over, each to their own but it seems a small market.

Did anyone else read the title of this thread and think at first that it was teuchter?

Edit: just read Mumbles’ post :)

depends on the hair,
was a fan of denman hair brushes for years

but a wide tooth comb gets better results and less pulling of the hair

don't carry one around mind...

Did buy a comb when I retired and decided to grow my hair a bit. Then decided I hate having hair that needs combing anyway so back to grade 3 for me.

My hair is very curly and I use a wide tooth comb (or even just my fingers), because it can tease out tangles without separating or flattening the curls.
If I tried putting a brush through my hair (long or short) it would just get stuck and/or flatten it.
My dad can't use a brush either, his hair isn't as thick these days as it used to be, but back in the day he found an Afro comb to be best for his curls.
My mum has straight hair and used to use a brush, or when it was fashionable, to back-comb (brush) it into a bouffant type style.

Yeh think I've used my fingers to do my hair most of my life lol. Well when I bothered. I mostly got haircuts often enough that I didn't need to bother (SO does like 10 relatives hair and my ex did too, dont think Ive paid for a haircut in 20 years) or was doing it at work while everyone drank tea and gossiped in the morning since a motorbike helmet makes styling your hair pointless before hand. Definitely did do the slicked back comb thing in my teens at times.

Had not considered different types of hair either. Which is kinda daft as I know its a thing, also that it was overlooked a lot. SO, daughter and son all use brushes so I generalised too much. Still waiting on daughter situation so a bit out of sorts.

You think that's something, you should check out all the different blades and attachments you can get with beard/body hair trimmers

If I go out in shorts or a suit or similar, I really don't want to be carting a brush around with me.

Hah. I suppose the point is that men don’t use combs as often as they used to, but maybe women do?

However, when I was young men bought combs like this:

Whereas women were expected to buy combs with long pointy bits. I don’t know what for. Prodding people?

I think combs are one of those things that once you have bought one, well, you don't exactly need another and they aren't going to wear out anytime soon.

I've never come across that particular gender distinction in comb buying tbh.
Mine looks like neither of those because it has wide teeth but no handle (those don't look robust enough for my hair), and N has 2, one like the top picture and one like the bottom picture.
A comb without a handle/tang is easier to carry in a pocket, but that's to do with how you carry stuff around, not specifically gender.
