The 2023 Russian Coup.

Right I've had to finish some work, back in front of a computer now. What have I missed? What's the coup?

Yet another thing we'll all be at a total loss to explain to our grandkids.

What with this and questions in parliament about a child not identifying as a cat, I fear we have drifted so far away from the main timeline that even the memory of Things Which Make Sense is fading from the world.

Maybe he‘s been told there’s a tangible chance of Putin saying fuck it and going nuclear if he felt it was curtains for him, and thought it plausible enough.

This level of uncertainty and volatillity is a pretty good result for Ukraine at this moment in time. Regardless of some patch up deal, where the power lies is uncertain. The shift, the break in the Kremlin's facade confirns that power and influence is factured in Russia and has been for some time.

No way would I predict what comes next. Peak, innit?

all the evidence is that they totally did - taking rostov and closing in on moscow. If Putin was in a postion to crush them - he totally would have.
Yes, I think all the signs are they would have rolled into Moscow virtually unopposed. It makes no sense to back out unless a snag was hit. I can't see what that could be other than an internal problem.

It sounds like there were negotiations going on all day which might explain the lack of actual conflict

Really very odd though. I’m not a military history knower, are there past examples of ‘could’ve totally couped you but chose not to’ ?
The Dutch could have had London that time but couldn't be arsed.

Eta: that was Charles II along with Great Plague and Great Fire of London I wonder what Charles III has in store for us.

surprised Elon not saying he called the Wagner boss and calmed it all down so we should kiss his arse
Part of the issue on Twitter is that firstly any cunt with £8 can get a blue tick secondly it’s a pyramid system of ‘info’ with the popular tweeters feeding off less popular sources off someone with OSINT in their name or one of the small army of Russian security experts none of which is verified or offers any meaningful analysis and lastly it satisfies a need to read what you want to read .
At least on here there is still room for some form of a debate with fewer pile ons and some respect for views .

Maybe it was correct when earlier today Washington Post suggested Prigozhin was after the heads of Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov rather than a push on Putin... And maybe that's what the deal done is based on.
That's the only explanation I can think of right now that makes sense

It was a feint wasn’t it. Or else something else entirely, that makes no sense.

It’s the equivalent of groups breaking up due to musical differences about the direction of the band or politicians who want to spend more time with families . Wagner will be spending more time in Africa and less in Ukraine is my guess whilst the Russian Army tries to recruit Wagner personnel.

Sometimes a freewheelin' warlord just gotta blow where the wind takes him 🤷‍♀️

Prigozhin had been careful to target his ire at them rather than Putin, so much so that there had previously been speculation before today that this was part of a ploy by Putin to find a way to back down in Ukraine.

But it's all speculation. The more certain someone's opinion, the more likely it is to be bullshit.

It’ll be interesting to see how the utterly surreal and not-at-all humiliating to Putin’s standing are reported by Russia’s TV channels.

Everyone in Russia is on Telegram, so they'll know what happened.

Maybe. But imagine Prighozin is John Lennon (see what I did there). He has to go far away. And get shot.

(Serious point - this is about Prighozin and Putin really, not Ringo Starr. Putin still has a country behind him. Prighozin looks like a dick. I can't see any way out for him. But then, 'all is not what it seems' definitely applies to Russia. It also sounds like an unreleased Beatles track.)

No way he just changed his mind, came over all squeamish about the prospect of lots of corpses. I think that’s the only thing that’s for sure, that what he said to explain it is a lie.

Prighozin looks like a dick.
im most curious what other wagner soliders make of this.
if the deal results in them getting something out of the russian state then maybe he isnt looking like a dick to them? but it would have to be something pretty good obviously

The first casualty of war is truth. There is no more truer cliche. All is not what it seems, and you cannot believe either side, even if it's your side.

Really I'm not sure that matters? They are mercenaries. They just get paid to do what they're told.

This man’s a savvy media manipulator as well or so I read, has own online army as well as the real one, so extra weird if he looks like a dick by mistake.

Could be that any concession has weakened Putin. With the brutality and from his point of view the intractability of a drawn out war taking the shine off his strong man/patriot hero persona. Just going back even to the attitude that he could roll over Ukraine quickly and decisively. Losing his grip maybe.
