That medal table's looking good

1 China 37 14 14 65
2 USA 19 22 25 66
3 Great Britain 12 7 8 27
4 Australia 11 10 12 33
5 Germany 9 6 7 22
6 South Korea 8 9 5 22
7 Japan 8 5 7 20
8 Russia 7 12 12 31
9 Italy 6 6 6 18
10 Ukraine 5 3 7 15

Chinese have almost overtaken the US on medal count now

Having never knowingly been being shy in sledging our former convicts, I was couroius to see whether the Australian media reported the medals table as per the BBC or as the American media does - joyously, they use the same methodology as the BBC.

Fwiw, I don't think so.

If you look back a little way in this thread a few ways to list the medals haul have been discussed. Personally, I think it's all a nonsense anyway (what does it prove, Australia has an irrational need to 'win' because of its heritage, that 'white' USA is utterly shite at sport, that the IOC lift the technical requirements on sport to preclude poor nations and preserve tv income from the rich west, . . . ). Really, how do you equate a Gold in 3 Day Eventing costing millions of pounds with an 18 year old African gril plucked out of her village a few months ago and given some shoes to run in . . .

Medals table is old toss, really - unless you're doing very well, then it really matters.

Exactly

And we are.

Exactly :D

12th place for Brownlee and 14th for Clarke in the mens triathlon. Brownlee was right up there until the third lap of the run, but faded a bit. Very hot conditions. Come 2012 he'll be 24 and should be a lot stronger.

So is this the way you plan long term for Olympic success? At the moment it looks like we're super aces at 3 event areas - cycling, rowing, sailing - are competent/in with a shout at others - horses, shooting, kayaking, canoeing, and not outstanding but can produce decent performances maybe in the rest...so you build on the 'bankers' and try and raise the rest?

I mean for 2012, the target surely is to be top among the Euro nations, and maybe 3/4 to China/US, battling with the Aussies? But then knowing that 1 man got so may of the US total...not invincible clearly...altho I suspect China might be starting an era of olympic dominance...

What, tho, of India?

India are the great sleeping giant - they won their first ever gold this year but that's it really, only ever pick up the odd bronze.

here's a summary of how GB intend to go from nowhere to somewhere at handball by 2012. This applies to several other sports as well.

what a games - if we can keep up this sort of form in london, and bring on some other sports - we could be on for 20 or 30 in london -

The official target for 2012 has been third - though GB may well take that positon in this Olympics.

Perhaps the issue is who will retire (Chris Hoy, for example) and who replaces them, and how many real medal chances will suffer injuries (Zara Phillips, for example).

Another issue is what on earth happens to this phenomenal level of funding and the major national level effort from 2013 . . .

It be good to get behind a team sport like Handball for 2012, all these sitting down sports don't so it for me, not that I'm complaining. :)

China 43 14 19 76
USA 26 26 27 79
Blighty 16 9 8 33
Australia 11 12 12 35
Germany 11 8 9 28
Russia 10 14 18 42
South Korea 8 10 6 24
Japan 8 6 8 22
Italy 6 6 7 19
Ukraine 5 4 8 17
France 4 11 14 29

Pas mal!

When the Australians hosted the Games in 2000, I remember thinking at the time how well they'd done in the medals they won.

Turns out they won . . . . 16 Golds - as hosts (58 medals in all). Whoa, GB is 4 years ahead of that. That is interesting.

China 45 14 20 79
USA 26 27 28 81
Great Britain 16 10 11 37
Russia 13 14 18 45
Australia 11 12 12 35
Germany 11 8 9 28
South Korea 8 10 6 24

I doubt we'll stay ahead of Russia, but as long as we beat the Aussies I won't care. :)

We're nearly up on them in silvers and bronzes as well now, with a few guaranteed to come in the boxing. :)

How much pressure on Team GB for 2012 now tho?

A lot. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it's been very important to have this exceptional performance so that the government can see that it's getting a good return on its money.

Ooer, those Russians are getting close. Quick, someone win a gold!

1 China 45 15 21 81
2 USA 27 28 28 83
3 Great Britain 16 11 11 38
4 Russia 14 14 18 46
5 Australia 11 13 13 37
6 Germany 11 8 10 29
7 South Korea 8 10 6 24
8 Japan 8 6 9 23
9 Italy 6 7 8 21
10 Ukraine 5 5 8 18

I changed my facebook status to 'loving being ahead of Australia in the medals table' and my Aussie mate came on and told me to 'bugger off you Pommy bastard'

:D
