That medal table's looking good

I did post about Barra's predictions before the Games began but it didn't get much response. Hardly dared hope he was right but he looks pretty much spot on to be fair to him

I was going to mention about the Italian stats guy Barra about his prediction that Britain would finish 4th in the medal table. By eck he was right & spot on!!

Even though i'm very pleased that GB are fourth in the medal table, i'm realistic to say that we'll do very well to match or even better in London 2012 than what was acheived in Beijing.

yes, but what if Scotland breakaway?!

I think we'll do better in London. There were plenty of disappointments this Olympics and if cycling maintains its dominance and the rowing, swimming and gymnastics teams (amongst others) maintain their upward curve then there's more medals for the taking. Especially once you add in home support/desire to do well on home turf.

The track and field team missed its medal target by one medal. Despite that there were a few near misses that were unexpected, so there is potential there. Our cyclists are there for everyone to chase. Will be interesting to see if the gaps are narrowed by 2012. Don't know about sailing, some of our competitors have been around for a while, will they still be there in 2012? Plenty of potential in rowing, canoeing, kayaking, boxing, diving, taekwondo, modern pentathlon, equestrian events to name a few. And gymnastics. Lots to be excited about

We'll clean up the sailing in 2012, home waters, they'll know everything there is to know about sailing there by then

Here's that final table then:

China 51 21 28 100
USA 36 38 36 110
Russia 23 21 28 72
GB 19 13 15 47
Germany 16 10 15 41
Australia 14 15 17 46
S. Korea 13 10 8 31
Japan 9 6 10 25
Italy 8 10 10 28
France 7 16 17 40

And what a pretty thing it is. Expect rioting to break out across Australia any time soon :)
