Tesla autopilot death

It was never likely to hapen with a truck being the second vehicle involved but its possible to imagine a lot of disquiet if it had been the third party driver who lost his head.
Bound to happen. This stuff is never going to work seamlessly no matter how advanced they think it is. In this instance the autopilot couldn't tell there was a truck in the road ahead. That's actually really simple compared to all else that can take place.

let's hear it for basic literacy
Do you want to stop nine million English people of working age and many English teenagers from posting on Urban?

English teenagers are among some of the least educated in the developed world, a report reveals.

Young people aged between 16 and 19 have been found to possess only a “basic” grasp of maths and English, with nine million people of working age having low literacy or numeracy skills.

The report, conducted by the OECD (the Operation for Economic Co-Operation and Development) found that out of 23 developed nations, English teens had the lowest literacy rates and the second to lowest numeracy rates.

Pretty serious omission on the part of the sensors on the Tesla, to miss a truck and drive into it.

nah I just can't stand homophones. Makes me a hypocrite cos I spell quite badly without a spellchecker. But never a homophone mistake. Cuba has one of the highest literacy rates in the world apparently. Theres a table on wikipedia but I'm not checking to see who ranks no1

Joshua D. Brown, of Canton, Ohio, died in the accident May 7 in Williston, Florida, when his car's cameras failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor-trailer from a brightly lit sky and didn't automatically activate its brakes, according to government records obtained Thursday. ..

Unable to distinguish between the bright sky and the white side of a truck, suggests to me that Tesla are using some optical sensing system rather than something more robust like radar.

I didn't mean to effect witch way you post hear buy the way, I except watt your saying ;)

I read the driver concerend had post a few video's of him in the car test it's autopilot. We await the verdict, but, it may be possible that the person in the car pushed the car too far.

Personally I only have a problem with it when it gets to the stage when no-one is driving and no-one is therefore responsible for the vehicle.First child that dies, and its inevitable in the long run ,should finish the project it seems to me.Plus, the obvious,a lot of people like driving ,truck-driving is relatively well-paid ,no need for it,no excuse for it.

God did it.

I think that could be possible.

There won't be a stage where nobody is responsible, because autonomous cars will be designed and built by human beings who can be found to be culpable if there are problems with their architecture and manufacture.

Ordinary cars kill children all the time, so why hasn't everything heavier than a pushbike been banned from the roads?

I am sceptical there will be a step change to automatic cars. Every other innovation has filtered into the car pool incrementally. Take ABS, at first it was only on a few luxury cars, now some decades later every new European car has ABS. I have said this before though.

It's not going to be sudden, and in fact I think the technology behind autonomous vehicles will make its first impact in areas like freight rather than private transport for individuals. Then some enterprising type will found an automated taxi business, and maybe then after that we will see people having self-driving cars parked on their driveways.

There was a report he was watching Harry Potter when he died.

"I'd rather die peacefully in my sleep like my father rather than screaming in fear like all his passengers"

Autopilot uses ultrasonic sensors and a forward-facing camera to control the car. It is designed primarily for motorway use, where it can switch between lanes without any direct steering input from the driver and react to traffic flow. Tesla’s Autopilot under scrutiny after fatal crash while system is deployed

Well an ultrasonic signal would possibly reflect from a white sided truck, depending on the solidity of the sides, perhaps the ultrasonics are for close range. However the "forward-facing camera" could perhaps easily be confused by white on bright.

Can't find it now, but in an article yesterday Tesla said so far they have covered 135 million miles so far, this being their first fatality, compared to the US rate of one death per 93 million miles for cars in the States*.

I'd bet a team of software writers, fast processors and modern sensors against a tired, angry, possibly hungry, territorial human at a task like motorway driving every day of the week.

* Yes, I know that's not how statistics work...

That looks like the Guardian article, which also quoted this shocking statement from Tesla

It goes on to say that the car’s autonomous software is designed to nudge consumers to keep their hands on the wheels to make sure they’re paying attention. “Autopilot is getting better all the time, but it is not perfect and still requires the driver to remain alert,”

It's unthinkable that they have released a product like this that is "not perfect". Being not perfect means it can result in accidents and accidents can result in deaths

Are you serious? No product is perfect (and how are we defining "perfect"?), therefore do you think all products should be recalled?

Tesla definitely have something to answer for by using an optical system that can be fooled by bright surfaces, rather than radar-based system which works off the texture and solidity of a surface, but to criticise them for not releasing a "perfect" product is ridiculous.
