Team GB Athlete Bianca Williams and her partner, Olympic sprinter Ricardo dos Santos, were stopped and searched by police in 2020. Sky News analysed.

PC Jonathan Clapham and PC Sam Franks of the Metropolitan Police Service have now won an appeal against their dismissal for gross misconduct after their stop and search of British world championships medallist Bianca Williams and Portugal Olympic sprinter Ricardo Dos Santos in Maida Vale in July 2020.

Their reinstatement as police officers will, no doubt, fill many people with confidence and great joy.

Sure they'll be slung out again as beyond the pale even for that ignominious force

Now they're going to be reinstated, will they get backdated pay to the date of their dismissal?

And will they have to pay back the donated money that they got?

If the answers are "yes" and "no" respectively, they'll have had a long holiday and a nice little earner.

It will be interesting to see how the "£155,020 raised by 9,349 supporters" to reward support PC Jonathan Clapham and PC Sam Franks "and their families" prior to their apppeal is viewed by HM Revenue & Customs.

Leniently, as we all already know.

Peel’s 9 principles of policing, numbers 2 and 7:

2. To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfil their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.

7. To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.

I could mention other relevant ones too.

Shame that some bloke in the 19th century could see what seems to be completely opaque to the police force of the 21st century.
