Some motorway speed limits to be cut to 60mph

:D

So that means 70then. Given NPCC guidelines on enforcement- 10% + 3mph the motorway speed limit is effectively 80 and this will reduce it to 70. It’s an emmisions thing so fair enough.

Safety elements of speed on motorways ( safest type of road) are always an interesting debate because of the massive impact both traffic and weather conditions have. But from an emmisions point of view fair enough.

5.4.3.2.1. Cue anti car joy sponges making this about half arsed no evidence based ‘safety’ comments rather than look at the emissions reasoning.

The new 60mph limit will be introduced across four stretches of road each up to 4.5 miles in length.

They will be the M6 between junctions 6 and 7 near Birmingham; the M5 between junctions 1 and 2 at Oldbury; the M1 between junctions 33 and 34 at Rotherham and the M602 between junctions 1 to three near Eccles.

So, a maximum of 18 miles. :D

Slower vehicles just spend more time on the road belching out fumes, they should double the speed limit to halve pollution. But this government never listens to science.
No they should quadruple the speed limit to reduce emissions to 1/16 of their current value...

If the HA / police are going to use enforcement cameras and variable speed limits in such short lengths of usually heavily congested routes, with the stated aim to reduce emissions, then I wonder what they'll do with the revenue ?

The current pandemic risks, despite rules for mask wearing on the reduced number of public transport services is not going to encourage car drivers to forgo the privacy & comfort of their own vehicle on the longer journeys.
