Actual lino, or the vinyl stuff that a lot of people refer to as lino but isn't?

(Actual linoleum, the stuff made from linseed, is fucking amazing stuff)

Already got them! I do like the feel of walking barefoot on carpet, though.

Cats are a factor in this situation - it's easier to clean hard flooring and they don't wake you up at 7am by scratching on it...on the other hand, I'm not keen on the prospect of hearing their little claws rattle up and down the landing at that time either.
I think one of the things I’m most looking forward to about our new house is NOT waking up to the sound and smell of the cat crapping in a litter tray at 5am.! But we’ve got to get through his two weeks of not being allowed out first. Not going to be fun at all

Having lived through the winter of 2010/11 when it regularly hit -10 at night, I do not recommend wooden floors whether hardwood or laminate, even with rugs, as the heat just didn't stay in the room. That was the winter I had a sleeping bag under two duvets with the heating on overnight. Carpet wins, at least in the bedrooms.

This has got me thinking about carpets. Can't really afford much right now but I need to do something.

Whether this makes sense really depends entirely on the type of building and the floor construction.

Yay, my bed has arrived and it's all in boxes. Perhaps I won't put it up till the carpet's done, and sleep somewhere else until then. I've done all the measuring for the carpets (which confused me a bit - don't they come and measure? Bear in mind I'm not doing this directly and some things may be getting lost in translation!)

Today and tomorrow morning are my final moving days. It's meant to be today but current landlord asked what time on Saturday I was leaving, so I'll go with that. Still have some large heavy suitcases to move. Such a pain with no car, and Ubers get annoyed when you take the p. Any suggestions? It's only 3km away.

I cancelled my work this weekend, so I have a whole weekend to clean, organise, and start getting the place kitted out. Exciting. I should restrain myself until the carpets are in, but I think I can buy some bits as they can always go in the kitchen/hallway.

These are the door tapestries I am looking at:

Any ideas of where to buy a nice floor lamp? I may well do a trek to Ikea for a mooch.

what is the intended function of the doorway curtain things - are they to go instead of a door ? Do you want them for privacy or decoration or something else?

I have two open doorways with no door - the kitchen, and a cupboard thing in the office/spare bedroom. The cupboard looks ugly and it's where I'll keep clutter/suitcases so just want it hidden. Plus that room is really bare with white walls so a bit of colour.

Kitchen I thought of bead curtains - in the 90s they were everywhere but I can't seem to find much of a decent selection.

Cupboard thing you'll definitely want to make sure the curtain covers it kind of exactly, so perhaps just a piece of fabric you really like cut to size?
I think bead curtains have quietly disappeared because they drove everyone mad tangling and jangling about and getting in your food as you carry it in & out of kitchen. A cat would love them though.

I took the door off our kitchen for the reason bimble mentions. It was a total faff and I think I’d feel the same about a beaded curtain or similar.

Where are you getting your carets from miss direct? In my experience, they come to measure and quote. I wouldn’t feel confident measuring that up and getting it right. I’ve got the fear about ordering the vinyl for a tiny porch so you might be braver and more competent than me. 😄

It could, but I will be getting a new carpet so am really just after a short term fix.

If you ask a local cab firm to send an 'estate car' as you've got suitcases to move, they'll know what to expect and shouldn't be a problem.

teuchter will be impressed to learn that I recently removed the door from my bathroom for the same reason, it was just annoying and unnecessary. Nice bit of fabric stapled up does the job fine.
I'm not expecting to be invited round anyway, so, whatever.

Some day there will be an incident which will reveal your error of judgement though.

In the interests of slightly more truthfulness, the whole door came off only after there was an incident not long ago with my DIY replacement of the door handle.
Very lovely new door handles but I did not do a perfect job of their installation and as a result somebody got briefly trapped in the bathroom. Nobody is getting trapped by a bit of fabric.

Have you measured into the doorway?
Friend of mine did that and carpet ended up 10cm short.
Whatever measurement you end up with add another 10cm on incase walls aren't straight.

Door free bathroom, no thanks! Closing the door and sitting on the loo for a bit is one of life's true pleasures.

I will never order a bed until I have proper internet again. Stuck here until 6pm with a massive work deadline and no Internet other than really weak mobile data. That was dumb of me. Not helped by the wrong information from customer services at the bed place. Bed is here but mattress isn't. Really want to put the bed together but better crack on with marking.
