Decorator refuses to get Wilko paint. Apparently knows where to get good paint. I shall see. I've seen another place he did and it did look good..but he had some odd suggestions like a purple living room.
Wilko paint is good enough and a lot cheaper than the alternatives. Dulux used to be good, better coverage so you could get away with less coats, but it's gone downhill.

Do check that he isn't going to get something ridiculously expensive like Farrow & Ball (which is probably my favourite paint, but only in small quantities of eggshell for furniture).

I normally use Dulux or Wickes paint. Never had a problem with the standard stuff, 2 coats would cover anything. Several years ago I got some Dulux trade paint mixed. It was like water. I've seen ink give better coverage. It took 4 coats of paint to get an even finish and to cover pencil marks. :(

Still not painted, nor even started. I can't clean properly because I haven't got a hoover (think I will borrow the one from my current place, the two rooms that have carpets in are horrible). Feeling overwhelmed juggling 3+ jobs and renovating and kitting out an entire home. Stupid delays.

It's ok not to have it perfect before you move it. Make lists, do things bit by bit. It will get done.

If it makes you feel any better I only started painting my bedroom last week. I moved in 7 months ago!

I don't need for it to be perfect, but at the moment,
I have no furniture apart from a desk, 2 plastic chairs, and a leather pouffe.
The only things to cook with are a slow cooker, kettle and toaster (I have a microwave and freezer but in storage and it's proving difficult to get them)
No proper internet, so I can't work

What I can do:
Get something like a bean bag to sit on in the mean time
Try to sort out internet
Buy a fridge from second hand shop round the corner
Throw a(nother) fit about the items in storage

The guys decorating haven't done anything yet and are making a fuss about me moving items/furniture in until it's been painted and carpeted.

it is so much easier for them to work in clear rooms as shifting furniture around/protecting it takes time. Why aren’t they starting?
If they can give you a finish date can you order everything to be delivered in one go a few days later

Freecycle and see if any kind soul fancies dropping stuff off, or if you can grab it if it's v nearby?

I think do it bit by bit, if you can keep 2 rooms fairly clear the decorators can prioritise those while you use the other spaces. It's going to take a bit of time though right.

Hopefully they will start today. It's tricky for them to fit it round work (one works nights). If I get there later (I'm gradually moving stuff in suitcases from the other place) and nothing's been done I will just start on my own as getting fed up now.

This is pretty standard for a first time buyer, you have nothing, and it all gets very expensive, very quickly. Ultimately you need to decide what you need right now, vs what you can do without, and then what you can, and cannot afford right now.

I was lucky in that I had carpets, and the walls didn't really need painting, but I can see why you'd want to get the painting done before carpeting, and I can also see the guys who want to do the paintings point of view too, however, you're paying them to do a job, so tell them to move their arses, or forget it, and you'll either do it yourself at a later date, or get someone else in after the carpets have been done. If they are professional enough, they shouldn't be afraid of a bit of carpet and furniture. Covering it up is part of the job usually.

As for buying stuff. Credit cards are your friend here, if you're able to get one. One with X months interest free credit. Buy all the white goods and furniture you need now on it and any other unforeseen expenses over the next few months, then rip it up with the intention to pay it off by when the 0% interest runs out. Second hand white goods may tide you over, but there's generally a reason someone got rid of it. It's already broke and someone has replaced the part and deemed it good enough to sell back on (it will break again) or someone's died!

After that, it's what you can afford as you go along, which is how I did things this time, as I've now got all the shit I didn't have before, and trust me, that stuff quickly accumulates, and when you next move you'll be saying to yourself "how did i end up with all this shit!"

I'm just missing all the lovely things I had in Turkey :( It's frustrating to have to buy everything again. And doubly frustrating that I could have had lots of useful items from my Dad's house if it wasn't so far away and there hadn't been a six month gap, and if others in my life had been a bit more willing to help :(

I’m remotely packing our house in London at the moment and shipping some stuff out to Portugal. Lots of stuff inot worth shipping especially post Brexit.

so glad I’ve got someone I can trust to do this for us, we are paying her though!

it has reminded me of the lovely stuff we have and also how much crap we’ve accumulated over the years!

we are on a white goods buying frenzy! Quite expensive her so having to maximise the sales!

It's just a load of stuff! It's gone. Oh well never mind. That's life.

You've just bought a place (im well jel) and now youre going to have a great time getting some awesome bits and bobs again! Woo hoo.

Come on, even with no help and in a pandemic its not that hard - charity shops, ebay, amazon, online shops etc will deliver, loads of basic shit can be got locally or online. Microwave and a rice cooker would arrive tomorrow, for example. If you post a wanted thing on freecycle people can be very kind and generous and helpful. :) "basic kitchen stuff" for example. Or a breadmaker ;) You can always give it away again!

Have started to dismantle giant wardrobe that dominates daughter's bedroom while she's on residential camp. Think we can get a decorator to start next week, may have to get some interim furniture until we come up with permanent solution. Was very satisfying dumping some doors and drawers this morning. Honestly, even before we get to redecorating and still have two fucked up walls the room's going to be so much nicer without it.

Sorry, room is a tip AND has laundry drying in it, but you get the idea

How do people actually find trustworthy tradespeople to do these things? I have a whole list of stuff I need to get sorted but it's really problematic getting anyone out to quote.
Sometimes there can seem to be as much work in getting quotes and finding someone, as doing the actual work itself. In fact there are certain smallish jobs that I just do myself for this very reason.

I use local forums in my postcode/area (one has a whole thread dedicated to local tradespeople with sub-headings and recommendations) and word of mouth.

Still not always reliable, though. We used one guy for a heating problem, recommended on a local forum, and weren't remotely impressed. Luckily my OH's cousin recommended someone who was fine.

In short - it's a pain in the neck. We tried to get people to refit our bathroom, got nowhere and ended up using a kitchen & bathroom shop with a local-ish shop, who are turning out OK so far with knowledgibility and appointments (insofar as they don't start till Sept) but are proving expensive.

ETA - we did find a good electrician from the local forum.

On ours people either recommend their boyfriends or someone who is surely brilliant but unobtainable.

If anyone in S London wants to recommend me a builder/brickie to at least repoint and probably rebuild a step area, hit me up.
And a fencer, electrician, plumber, roofer...
