Show us yer house and house-related meddlings

The blue's on and it's pretty lush. Nb, there's totally madness going on on the floor - appears to be vinyl on floorboards, then underlay, then a large rug, then another layer of underlay, then the vile carpet  Friend has suggested could be for extra insulation, which might figure with previous owners.

What is that colour called Cloo? Looks amazing!

What colour scheme would you suggest for a big room with big west-facing windows, so not much direct sunlight?

It's currently a pale mint green.

Added complication is that I bought a second hand sofa that's black leather and a fairly modern design, but it's in a big old building.

I was thinking a very dark blue on one wall, and then an off-white on the others, but I'm concerned the black sofa will clash.

Oh, yeah, the flooring is pale wood laminate. It's not great quality, but I can't afford to change it, so I need to get one or two really big rugs, so any recommendations for where to get enormous rugs at cheap prices also appreciated.

Thanks Cloo.

I am half considering changing my downstairs layout to end up with more usable kitchen. Downstairs is compact which is fine but the tiny kitchen detracts from the house a bit. Hopefully this image works:
(kitchen is bottom left). Reckon my best change is stealing space from my lounge (right hand side). What do people think?

What's the top left and bottom right spaces?

So is that the front door going straight into the dining room? How do you use the dining room?

I have a porch before the front door but yes. I use it for keeping my various bikes in at the moment. There is a dining room table and chairs in it too.

It looks from your layout that you could only go into the lounge unless you move your kitchen to the front of the house. What do you want from your kitchen? I think it looks like you have an ok amount of space, it just needs to be reconfigured. Is it a terrace?

Sorry i have no experience of this! Currently looking to extend our downstairs a bit though.

Hello. Looking for some advice regards external timber treatment/finish.

My fabulous table needs refinishing as the exterior varnish I used was water based ffs. It showed a front door on the tin covered with water droplets so seemed perfect. Not.
Went mouldy and I’ve had to strip the lot back.

Anyway, not sure what to do.
It’s top is pine scaffold boards and I’d quite like them to stay fairly true to colour although not fully as it’s rather anemic right now.

Can I apply an oil then varnish as reading up this sounds a like the most protection.
If so, any recommendations? I remember reading of Osmo on here and it’s also mentioned in this guide Exterior Finishes; Which One Should You Choose? - The Knowledge Blog

I think Cid knows this stuff??

Cheers xx

I’m no expert on outdoor stuff... I’d probably use an osmo outdoor specific finish (or actually just ask them). Outdoor varnishes are a also mysterious to me, and I don’t trust them:hmm:

They might hold up ok unfinished... probably depends on how/if they’re treated (I mean they are intended for building sites after all), which is a little hard to know.

Thanks Cloo.

Kirsty would knock through the dining room into the lounge, put the kitchen in dining area and turn the old kitchen into a study or a utility room.

Could you combine the kitchen and dining room in a more open plan way? This might require different stairs... In my house the stairs are semi open and come down into the kitchen (albeit at one side, not in the middle) which makes it feel more spacious than if you had a boxed off stairwell, door etc.

I used a Wickes Exterior Varnish (clear satin maybe) on a bench I rebuilt in 2015 and it's just sat outside in all weathers since. The Wickes 'stainless' bolts are a roll of the dice though.

The other one will definitely need more workspace though - I want to take apart our old coffee table and rebuild it as a er coffee table. Mrs FA really doesn't like it and admittedly it is pretty crap. We've had it a long time though and I'm a sentimental old fool. It's got these big metal bolts that sit proud of the table top and Lil'FA basically teethed on them, stuff like that.

No idea about what it might look like yet though.
Well it's going to look pretty much like it started as it turns out. But smoother and less rickety.

I was going to put some colour on it but couldn't convince people of my vision so I'm basically taking it apart, cleaning/sanding/varnishing/cleaning/sanding/varnishing etc etc, then polishing all the wood & replacing all the carpet tacks with new screws and respraying the bolts/braces then hopefully putting it all back together again. Was all lovely when I could work outside but snow unfuckingbelievably has stopped play.

It started off like this: years of beers poured, takeaways scoffed, lines chopped, pills crushed, spliffs skinned. Then (er after it was mopped down a bit), Lil'FA teethed on the sides and learned to walk hanging off it. Mrs FA got it from a secondhand furniture place in Clapham Junction in 96/97 from a bloke who said it was 'really old and probably Indian'.

It's stupidly heavy and the legs are a different type of wood to the top though I have no idea what woods they might be.

My mum's got a table just like that! It's not really old - they were all over the place in the early '90s sold out of the sort of shops that sold Indonesian masks and crystals and smelled really incensey - like the one that was on Neal Street (no idea whether it is still there). We had a similar shop in Guildford too (called Topaz, iirc) which is probably where my mum got hers (and a matching smaller square version).

(Nice solid tables, this post is not a criticism of the things - I always wanted one)

If you sand/prime etc, can you use car spray paints like Hycote onto wood? So many colours and finishes 🤩
