Frankly I feel it should be abolished. Despite my great uncle being a Hounds Master (The Earl of Minto blew the bugle at his graveside), I feel that it is outdated in it's current form. There is no need for a hunt any more. The animals that they hunt are not sufficiently invasive to warrant it. In the Scots Borders we have the Common Ridings, it doesn't involve hunting animals. By all means continue to wear the fancy outfits on a riding if you get off on that sort of stuff, but let the hunting dog tradition die off. It's cruel to the hounds as well as the prey.

Just let it go. We don't own slaves anymore; we don't behead queens for the sin of not bearing male children anymore; we don't send small children up chimneys or into looms anymore. We can let this silly tradition die out too.

did you miss the reporting of hunts bringing in foxes to hunt? this isn't and never has been about pest control

No, I agree. There has not been a significant pest that warrants hunts for one or even two centuries at least. Convert them to Common Ridings (Scots style), allow the hounds to die off, but the hunts are not necessary. Fancy folk can still get dressed up, toot their horns, and ride agreed routes. The tradition doesn't need to die, just the hunting, it is un-necessary. I think we may be both arguing the same point though.

Some good news today. I found out that at the end of January, one of the two pheasant shoots that operates from our village is going to shut (as usual) and never restart again (not as usual). They’ve been struggling to make it work economically for a while now and apparently this year was the final straw
