Sooo... Safety systems work as expected? I can't imagine that no-one noticed the diving planes were set to dive and the depth reading wasn't increasing.
I’d imagine the crew would start to hear unusual stress noises on the hull well before the crunch point? Or is that a Hollywood cliché?

There have been hundreds of attempts to do just this…it was not exactly “top secret” that is was a troop ship..it was part funded by the US Navy..so it complied with a lot of navy requirements for survivability..so there were no big, grand public spaces, and no wood panelling. That’s why it was such a failure as a liner..it may have been faster than a Cunarder, but it was never luxurious.

When I was doing my skippers ticket they qualified that by saying always get out of the way of the bigger, or faster moving vessel, they're going to have the greater problems changing direction. Despite this you still see the fuckwits who think that it's their right of way and will not move.

and they're just expected to leave it there? yes it's an appalling mess legally, but ....
