Self-indulgent pet thread

I've just left Stanley The Greyhound at the vets, as he has been shitting and sicking blood, so they are putting him on a drip to rehydrate and run lots of tests.

I started crying when they said they would be keeping him in over night. I have no idea why. I didn't react like that when Cilla The Cat had to stay in. It was just his sad little face and a lack of (my) breakfast possibly. He never looks ecstatic at the best of times but he's clearly very miserable at the moment. So will keep telling myself he is in a safe place. :(

Awww. My friend's dog (rescue from Hungary) had some blood shitting when she first had her. Eventually it settled; we put it down to nerves and having to get used to a) being fed at all and b) the type of food she was having to get used to and c) nerves (friend's husband is a big, tall and loud German :D if you know what I mean (dog is fine with him when is lying [sp?] down)). And of course you started crying; we have pets for a reason! (((TikkiB and Stanley)))

ETA Strikethrough used as computer won't let me delete.

Thank you all.

Just been to see him and the drip is obviously working as he was much brighter than when I left him, and his tail was all waggy. They still aren't sure what has caused it but tests are continuing and he'll be in for another day

It was very nice to give his bony thin body a big hug, I'm surprised how much I'm missing him as he is not a noisy or exuberant hound. Am now being overly affectionate with the cats to get a fur fix.

(((waggy tail)))

It looks like it's haemo something gastric flu, which seems to mean the bug that is causing is attacking blood cells. I'm very bad at taking in a lot of medical information but the main thing is that it is treatable, but will mean a few more days stay. I visited again and had to be rather assertive because he was much more stressed than yesterday, mainly i think because he was in a not very big cage ( he hates being penned in), and there was a howling (proper heartrending howls) from the dog in the next crate. So, they've said they will move S elsewhere, hopefully with more room. They were worried about contagion but then the vet seemed to think they could rig something suitable up. They are a good vets but I always worry about people not "getting" greyhounds. They are so unlike other dogs it is untrue.

And ion, i am in bed feeling nauseous and chilled. Gastro enteritis cant cross species, right?

I gave my 2 dogs a horrid bug the other christmas. (sorry babies) Cross species contamination is quite rare, but it happens.

Can you take in one of your scarves/pillows/anything that smells of you/home?

I'm off to collect him to bring him home. Hurrah! less hurrah is the fact that he hasn't been eating, and he doesn't really have the luxury of fat to lose.

Anyway, the freerange chicken fillets have been poached and are ready for his lordship's return.

:) at coming home

hope stanley's back to full health soon

My kitchen window is finally functional.

Between Feliway and setting up a couple of "safe" spaces with kitty treats and drinking water we made it through ok. Schrodes wasn't happy with the drilling but as soon as the builder left he was back to his normal self :) Thank you for all the suggestions and advice.

Here he is giving his approval of the reinstalled window.

Stanley has had his checkup and is doing well- as I would hope given he has been hand fed roast chicken every day since he got back to encourage his appetite and smuggle in his umpteen pills. So well in fact that for the first time since we've had him (3 years), he is sleeping on the sofa. Which of course we aren't stopping because: we are soft/he's been v ill/ it looks cute. He only gets turfed off if we want to sit there, which seems fair. He is also enjoying the chicken so much that he is turning his elegant nose up at anything that isn't chicken.
