I tried to listen to DSOTM and bailed about half way through Time. Tiresome dirges. Not for me.
It's fucking awful, and what's with all that tedious spoken word bollox all over the place. I note he's basically refused to use any lead guitar...almost reads like a FU to Gilmour.

I heard he'd redone the album and assumed it was some kind of note for note remake and he'd just wanted to replace all those second class citizens who used to make up his retinue, aka Pink Floyd. I've just managed 5 minutes of the remade album and realised it's, well, how the fuck to describe it? Fucking awful, certainly, but beyond that... He claims he was the dominant voice in the original album and so, if that's true, he's laying down some kind of sub-lounge lizard vocals on top of it... I know, I know, he thinks he's a genius, ha ha... In his hubris he's shitting on his own creation.
His remake shows he was anything but the dominant or most creative in the band...

To be fair this sounds quite creative. He got people to part with large amounts of money for a gig and then spent an hour of it reading from his autobiography, including 20 minutes about his pet duck. Suppose it's a change from antisemitism. I doubt that he's suffering a 'breakdown', but he does illustrate the strange places narcissism and unpleasantness will take you to.

I'll be honest, I haven't followed his career at all until the latest slew of stories about spats and (kind of) nazi uniforms. Having said that, from this point onwards, if you go and watch one of his gigs, you deserve what you get.

I was listening to the original, and tbh it would have sounded better without that wanky lead guitar

Yep it's just all ego, and him just being a bit of a wanker from an early age no longer held in check...

There can be only one:

Fucking hell it is exactly like this.

Even if you hate Pink Floyd, as it’s traditionally very popular to on this forum, DSOTM has sold 45 million copies, and for many of those still bears repeat listens.

This would struggle to sell 45 copies and a single listen feels one like too many so far
The entire album has been copied at least 3 times; dub side of the moon, dubber side of the moon and doom side of the moon.

I grew up listening to Floyd, the early albums through to the mid 70s. Sort of liked them, prog and rock were my thing, but they always seemed a bit bloodless. Didn't quite get the wizards and twiddles of full on prog and were never gritty enough to be full on rock . Some of the least sexy music you could listen to. Gilmour is an exquisite guitarist though.

Couple of newspaper reviews from people who were actually there at last nights event- the slightly different takes on 'why can't they keep rock music out of politics' are interesting, although not especially so. But still more interesting than anything this superannuated cultural aristocrat has to say or to market.

Then there's this at a Pink Floyd fansite:

Tonight sees the second of the two shows there, so today, we WON'T reveal much about the event, so as not to spoil any surprises. With the experience of last night, there are a few important things we can talk about, and prepare people who are going to the second show this evening.

First, a general reminder that they are very strict on phones, cameras, even smartwatches, and they are locking these in pouches so are unaccessible inside the Palladium. Therefore, please ensure you have a separate payment card for use at the bar or merchandise stand, as you won't be able to use contactless on your phone. VERY IMPORTANT TOO - switch the phone off before going in the pouch, or at least put it on silent. Last night in quiet parts of the first half, phones could be heard, but not silenced as they were in their pouches. They will be in them for a number of hours, so best to just switch them off - save your battery!

There's merchandise on sale - the orange vinyl 2LP (also available from Roger's online store) as well as the CD and cassette (this is again an Roger's online store exclusive). There was a limited number of special prints, but with just 100 numbered examples they went fast - maybe there will be more tonight? Finally, there was a commemorative t-shirt and hoodie for sale. Those with a VIP package get a nice bag, with a t-shirt, standard print, guitar picks set and some badges.

Even if could afford to be this kind of fan it's an entirely alien world to me.

True confession time: I was a teenage Pink Floyd fan. First album I bought with my first holiday job pay packet. First gig I ever went to. But Dark Side marked my jumping off point in some ways. It wasn't the first album I didn't buy - there was a soundtrack album before it. Saw a version of it performed at the Rainbow the year before the LP came out and wasn't knocked out, but I was already falling out of love. Water's song writing was one part of that. Went with my friends to see them at Earls Court just after it came out. We had seats high up on one side and I remember looking a trifle glumly at the rocket on a wire straight in front of us, which was going to be part of the climax. That was over fifty years ago. I had just turned twenty.

Some stuff which I really liked in the past I find unlistenable today - the Clash for example, unlike many other punk groups. Don't feel that way about bits of the Floyd from the time I was a fan, but beyond curiosity there's no real motivation to listen to it.

I have as much desire to listen to Water's current output as I do to get caught in a downpour of rain.

I've seen them twice, once at Wembley, once at the Docklands Arena. Absolutely superb both times.
Never saw them, though I was slightly tempted to see Nick Mason doing his Floyd thing a year or 2 back. I did though go and see Gilmour redoing the Pompei gig at the cinema. Largely out of nostalgia as I'd seen the original film around 1976.

Had a listen to the new DSOTM last night. Lordy. Won't be making that mistake again. :D

Without the poetry, some of it might have been worthwhile but wtf's all that stuff about his mate dying etc? Gawd, the ego on the bloke.

I enjoyed seeing Pink Floyd live at Earls Court but funnily enough, Waters was long gone by then. They played most of DSOTM that night. Maybe even all of it? I took my Mum as a birthday present. She still reckons it's the best gig she's ever been to. :)

. Learning guitar. i jam (very inadequately) each Monday morning with a few long suffering pals. we 'play' a variety of songs but nae Floyd. This last week a new geezer turns up to play bass guitar. He was keen to launch with 'Another Brick in the Wall'. This morning i thought i had better listen to the track so out came the vinyl and i listened to side one and two to refresh my memory. Profound stuff but absolutely not light listening. The strumming pattern for this song is flummoxing for me but i'll stick wi it til its reight. Those here who are sniffy about Floyd and Waters are plain prejudiced with a hefty dose of tinitus and wax which can be sucked out for money now that the NHS has stopped dealing with such matters.:p

As a band they had a lot of qualities and if you liked that kind of thing, they were very good. As touched on above, I did like that kind of thing in my teens, though I always had slight reservations at the public school, bloodless ethos of the thing (though I'd never have known that was it back in the day). But yeah, of course, they were a significant/great band. But this is as much about Waters as it is the band, indeed the thread is entirely about Waters. ;) He was a twat towards the rest of the group, with delusions of grandeur and, as it turns out, a complete scumbag politically.

I started watching a documentary on Netflix about Hipgnosis, the design studio behind many famous album covers, but I had to stop watching cos Rog turned up after 5 minutes.
