riots in paris banlieu...

there was polling in france in an article on fr.yahoo.com asking who would be able to deal with the problems in the suburbs, the results were:

sarko 53%
de villpin 53%
jack sang socialist party 41%
francois hollande socialist party 33%
chirac 29%
le pen 24%

this was in responce to the question can this person deal with the problems, yes or no?

They do indeed appear to have switched their focus to the city centres rather than their own estates...

maybe they'll move on to Neuilly sur Seine to the west of Paris, a rich bourgeis suburb where Sarkosy is the local mayor and MP....

Sarko, salaud, le peuple auras ta peau!

Just heard on the radio that the "state of emergency" laws are to be extended another 3 months as they don't expect the rioting to die down quickly.

I heard a commentator on the radio say that this could be the end of the Fifth Republic. Is that a possiblity or is it the case of a commentator getting carried away by the drama of it all?

Unlikely - AFAIK this is still confined to specific sections of French society, not a countrywide, all classes against the State pre-revolution stage.

Of course, if the rioters piss enough of their countrymen off it could lead to a Le Pen (or similar) gaining power and killing the 5th Republic off in other ways...

I think it depends on how you define: Equality, Fraternity &....
Can these ideals exist without direct representation?

Does anyone know if there's a book running on the nightly 'Cars set ablaze' totals? Seems to be averaging about 350 a night...

Ah here you go. From the Beeb.

13 November: 284 cars
12 November: 374 cars
11 November: 502 cars
10 November: 463 cars
9 November: 394 cars
8 November: 617 cars
7 November: 1,400 cars

So just over 4,000.

Who would do something so sick?

I dunno - I'm surprised no one has opened a market for it on betfair or similar...

Besides, it's no sicker than running a Celebrity Death competition where you pick some slebs at the begining of the year and the one with the most corpses at the end of the year wins the pot...

it's a sick idea that can only make the situation worse.

Fair enough. I have called Le Crime Watch de France and reported Kyser.

Hopefully the riots will stop once they have the sicko is custody.

On what grounds is it sick CD? I can see why it could be seen as amoral but sick? Buttfucking little kids is sick; spreadbetting on how many cars are going to be burned of an evening is hardly in the same league is it?

BTW...JOKE SUGGESTION...not even original to me either...there's a sci-fi book called 'Hard Wired' by Walter John Williams set in a future Tampa where there's a nightly book on the overnight murder tally...

Perhaps if you spent less time trying to be funny you might have something worthwhile to say for yourself.

No, I like this thread. It's warm and comforting...hey, maybe that's the heat from the burning cars!! Just what's needed now the nights are getting a bit parky...

le pen is on a 24% approval rate at the moment  as for similar, watch out for phillipe de Villiers the leader of the MPF, mouvement pour la france, basically right wing conservative catholic hang/flog/guillotine and then repatriate the bodies france. until recently, he was only getting a respectable number of votes in the vendee area of western france (notorious for his right wing catholic conservatism and past support for the monarchy during the revolution), but his appeal is spreading because he is seen as respectable and not a fascist like le pen. he'll still be against the wall come the revolution.
