riots in paris banlieu...

le pen is on a 24% approval rate at the moment

Not surprising - remember, this is a country where during the last Prez election the Socialists hung a banner saying 'Vote for the Crook, not the Facist'

I think some of them are carried away. channel 4 said even the Eiffel Tower was targetted. that's an awful ot of metal for your average anarkids to burn down :D

I thought so. I also get the feeling that what we are seeing on telly isn't the full story. I actually saw the same piece of footage being used last night that was being used last week.

it should also be remembered that burning cars are nightly occurrences in the banlieux, only, suuddenly now, does it become a news item to head the news.

I guess there aren't enough exicting domestic news stories. All we have at the moment is the Tory leadership contest, Blair loses terror vote, new security measures for railways stations and the usual crap about anti social behaviour and drug taking models. It's a shit time to be a journalist.

and a good reason to have a go a the french, especially if you're the telegraph or american media :D

I like the way the telegraph blame the french for all they've done to the immigrants and the rough deal they get, blah, blah....

coming from them, it sounds a bit rich....

That's The Torygraph for you: the little Englander mentality in black and white.

International Herald Tribune is saying France needs affirmative action (illegal in Europe right?). Not sure if that worked in the states, even.

One of my students yesterday was saying that she'd heard a) separate muslim schools was an issue, b) girls not wearing hijabs were attacked.

Anyone else heard this?

They might also need some representation in their National Assembly (which they don't seem to have) and some minorities of television (which they also don't seem to have)

Despite the fact that the majority of rioters are French Citoyens, there is an under representation of ethnic minorities in the French National Assembly. Whether simply "allowing" the "cream" to take their places their under the auspices of the established parties is the solution is another issue entirely...............

I agree.

The more I find out about France and it's way of thinking, the more that I'm seeing a similarity to Quebec, Canada.

Quebec did exactly what you are suggesting, created a separatist party and ran it in the Federal elections. They call themselves the Bloc quebecois, hold seats in the Federal parliment and fight for their people.

Whatever works. Maybe a good example for Frecnch minorities to emulate.

hmm, are you advocating some form of discrimination involving ethnic origin?

I would imagine that it's simply the point that ethnic communities in the UK have made inroads in to being elected as representatives in the National Assembly.

How you got +discrimination from that boggles the mind somewhat...

I have actually seen quite a few non-white faces on French television.

it's the way a dodgy poster phrased it that made me suspicious. [pedant mood] and anyway, do you mean the House of Commons? [pedant mood over]

that's different. the Bloc Quebecois wants independence, french people of north african origins want to be fully french, not a separate entity.
