Rinse FM

Uncle Dugs isn't one of them. He just plays old records that you've heard way too many times already. And chats crap over them

I've listened to a couple of shows and hate them!
Enough nostalgia! No talking! New records please! (Unless they are disco - carry on HMD, I'll make an exception for your show)

the thing is the hardcore/jungle scene is barely documented - especially if you compare to the hippy era or punk with its endless books, interviews and essays. Foul Play for example are one of the most talented crew of producers from the scene - legendary. Ive never seen an interview with any of them. Even people like Marc Mac and Dego, who have managed to break out into broader acknowledgement in the music world are completely underepresented in music media< to me they're national treasures! As far as i can tell there is one reason only for this: many hippies and punks went on to have high flying jobs, most relevantly in academia and media, ravers didnt. The myths of their youths have been repeated over and over and given validation which has brought that history into the mainstream. Plugging the gap Dugs show is a vital bit of oral history for anyone who cares about the scene. Interviewing all sorts of characters who made it happen, from dodgy promoters, motormouth mcs and all sorts.

Im not complaining about that lack of coverage: I dont want a BBC4 documentary on it to be honest - but its long overdue that someone is really digging into the history, and id rather it was someone from the scene doing it in a pirate fashion, rather than a team of BBC researchers and professors. Tomorrow we'll not only get an interview, Dugs will play the whole FP discography and enthuse over the top of it < all the way good.

ETA: the documentation of the scene is happening only now, through the hive mind of the internet, by the people who care about it. Finding all the rare bits and pieces, lost dubplates, secret stories, all of that. Thats a wonderful thing.

I really like his old records, his chatting shit less so.

I quite like shows with interviews, but he interviews each tune pretty much when he can squeeze it in between shoutouts.

Loads! I don't want to hear a show that is ALL records I've heard too many times already though. It's unhealthy to wallow in nostalgia so much

In that case, have you thought about starting your own radio station where you could put out some obscure tunes?

Love listening to their station especially Kismet's show. I've always wanted to go to their nights but never got round to doing so! :(

The Uncle Dugs show is superb.

Other shows that play new music are also.

It doesn't have to be one OR the other!

I
It stuck with me that he picked that tune as it was one that blew my mind at the time, and sounded so much unlike anything else that had gone before (a bit harder to tell that now, 20 years down the line) - its so stripped, a real taste of jungle to come - it was from mid 92 when most people were still going mad with pianos and rave stabs.

the bit at 3.54 used to kill me :D

@ska invita - I've found a spare of this which isn't really good enough condition to sell on discogs, but if you've not got it and you'd like it you're welcome - bit snap, crackle and pop in places though :D

Stumbled upon a really nice article about Foul Play here:

The club ads on Rinse don't make the clubs sound that inviting.
Just listened to one and it spent most of it listing acceptable brands of footwear you must wear if you want to get in.

No sportswear, not even in the cloakroom! The only brands I could remember that were acceptable were Converse and Vans

Billy Daniel Bunter covered the Uncle Dugs slot last Friday. 88-93 set so most of it was the stuff I like best. Played some new mixes of old classics too. I enjoyed it and reckon it's worth a listen.

Nicky Blackmarket is doing this Friday's slot so looking forward to that.

Nicky BM is firing as per!

Will download this later to listen to next week. Looking forward to it.

ska invita, thanks for mentioning kool again. I know you've probably pointed me in their direction about a dozen times but I finally went to their website earlier in the week and it is really easy to download shows, although they don't look like they get them up as quick as Rinse.

Bunter's show on Kool was far too much Happy Hardcore for me, but will give a few more goes as I think (hope) it was a theme as he was saying something along those lines.

i happened to hear that show - he had guests in that week - an australian female dj and her crew - i listened to a fair bit out of pure curiosity
usually what you get is a classic 88-92 selection, sometimes even some ragga jungle + lots of tabloid waffle
he can be a good dj to catch playing out, but not my favourite radio dj tbh
