BUT I've gone on about it enough so you may have encountered it already and it's not everyone's idea of lush and ambient. I often listen to it when I'm horizontal though.

i also enjoy chilling to sunn o))), but have been doing so almost constantly for months... wanted something a little more uplifting and less doomy.

think i've already downloaded that one too. :D

The Black Dog have just released another album "Further Vexations" which is lovely stuff as usual.

also this year I'm liking - Circlesquare - Music for dancing & drugs and Mountains - Choral

These are my favourite ambient albums of recent years - all of them absolutely exqusitely lush. Check them out.

Deaf Center - Pale Ravine
Porn Sword Tobacco
Machinefabriek - Dauw
Machinefabriek - Zucht (This one's a two track EP - Zucht2 the second piece is one of the lushest pieces of ambience you're likely to hear)
Emeralds - What happened
Jacaszek - Treny
Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet

Deaf Center and Tim Hecker compete for the much sought after position of number one in my ambient hit parade.

Ooh can I also add Celer's Engaged Touches. If the dictionary played music and you looked up the word 'lush' you would probably find this album playing.:)

There's a German ambient bod called Gas whose stuff is amazing.
The Matinee Orchestra's album is a really good one
Really like Helios's stuff as well, and I think his stuff under another name, Goldmund (?) is v good.
Max Richter's albums are lovely, in a Harold Budd-esque way.

Ullrich Schnauss. He fits the bill.

Best listened to on headphones with a cold beer in ya hand on a boat in the gulf of thailand about to dock at ko pha ngan for a party. mmmm....

check out 'a strangely isolated place'.

Unkle-Do Androids Dream Of Electric Beats

I like the first 10 mins, tho it won't be to everyone's taste. The rest of it's bang on

so has Nigel Kennedy, doesn't mean he's not shite :p

Except he's not shite, if you had any idea how to understand what he's trying to achieve. Which you clearly don't. Your bloated benchmark of acceptability no longer applies on this forum, please try the NME chatrooms, thanks bye.

Yes to all of the above + the aforementioned Fun Years album (and of course, everything by SoL). I'd also add:

Stephan Mathieu - Radioland
Kevin Drumm - Imperial Distortion
Peter Broderick - Float
Marsen Jules - Herbstlaub
William Basinski - 92982
Hildur Gudnadottir - Without Sinking

He produced a great debut album, a decent second and a frankly embarrassing third album. Anyway, I think it's something of a disservice to suggest Strangely Isolated Place is best heard in preparation for ghastly trance parties, packed with rich kid gap year students painted in day-glo, on what once was a beautiful Thai island. Surely it's a more evocative piece of music than that?

And yes to these! Although not heard the Kevin Drumm one so will check this out.

The one thing about that Stephan Mathieu album that I don't like is the size of the god-damned box. It doesn't fit into any piles of cd's and therefore is always hanging about on the shelf out of place - and the colouring of it also makes it very attractive to my toddlers who therefore repeatedly pick it up and put it somewhere even more out of place! Grrr!

Awesome album though.:)

the field - from here we go sublime.

obvious choice, but no one has mentioned it yet, so worth chipping in for those who may not have heard of them..

edited to add: Great tune.

i've been preoccupied for the last few days, but will be ON IT with your suggestions shortly guise. plenty of stuff i ain't never heard of, which has to be good...

I adore the debut album 'Kurr' by the band amiina. It's quite plinky plonky and just wonderful for lying in bed chilling/sleeping.

Well. Maybe you went to the wrong beach :p

L.S.G. - Into Deep <3 <3 (I cannot recommend this album enough)
Eat Static - Back To Earth
Global Communication - Pentamerous Metamorphasis
Ulrich Schnauss - Far Away Trains Passing By
Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports
Bonobo - Days To Come
The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur

Maybe if you aint heard:

Orbital - In Sides
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient works 1 (2 is great too)
The Orb - U.F.Orb

A couple more from me - this is my specialist subject!:)

The new Pan American album 'White Bird Release' is currently floating my ambient boat....

Also last night I first listened to the new album by Svarte Greiner - 'Kappe' - which is absolutely first class. (Svarte Greiner is half of Deaf Center who I reccomended above). This one's a pretty dark affair but a totally engrossing listen.
